Poseting and possible Reflux -advice plse

Hi Everyone

My DS is 6 weeks on Sunday and for the last week and a half has started to poset. It is sometimes a small amount but mostly comes in what seems like gushes and often in part through his nose. I am obviously concerned because of this but also because it seems to occur no matter what position (vertical, horizontal and anything in between ) he is in.

The Dr has advised us to use Baby Gaviscon (usually added to formular) I'm bfing so there would be an issue around how this would be administered but moreover I am wondering wheather anyone has any other more natural solutions that have worked for them.

I would be grateful for any advice.

Does he seem at all upset when he throws up?

DS2 is a bit of a chucker and a little sometimes comes out his nose, it doesn't appear to bother him though so I haven't worried about it.

Sometimes is fresh milk straight after a feed and sometimes a bit cheesy if a bit later on. Has done it since birth, he is 11 weeks now.

I wouldn't give Gaviscon (or anything) unless baby seemed upset/wasn't weeing or pooing or whatever.

Gaviscon can cause horrible constipation which it seems to me is worse than a bit of sick.

Haliborange · 11/06/2010 20:27

The possetting you describe doesn't sound terribly unusual to me. If he doesn't seem distressed maybe he is just a chucker?

Schulte · 11/06/2010 20:32

If he's happy and putting on weight, I wouldn't worry. You'll obviously have a lot of washing and mopping up to do, and I wouldn't advise wearing him in a sling facing you as he'll be sick down your bra but if you have a sicky baby, I am afraid I think you'll just have to wait for him to grow out of it. DD1 was extreme in that she puked everywhere, every 5 minutes for the first 10 months of her life and she's now a strapping 3 yr old and I can finally laugh about it. But when we were in the middle of it all it was friggin' hard work so you have my heartfelt sympathies! Good luck.

PS Obviously do talk to doc and HV if you're at all concerned - I know sometimes there is an underlying cause but I think in most cases there isn't and they'll just grow out of it sooner or later.

Morloth he does seem upset particularly when it comes from his nose he puts his head back and arches his back- the poset sounds similar to the consistencies of your DS.
DS wees and poos regularly enough.

Haliborange it is a bit of a relief to know that on the face of it it doesn't sound like anything sinister, though when it happens - and it is happening more and more frequently- I cannot help feeling simply helpless.

Schulte he is putting on weight and yes I do have a fair amount of washing and he has already been sick down my bra (on more than one occasion!)

Am I being rational by trying to keep him upright for as long as possible? I'm now scared to put him down/leave him in his cot in case he posets and chokes

I don't think he will choke on the sick if lying flat but for your own peace of mind you could get a movement sensor for the cot (if he is in his own bed). We had one with my DD as she also had reflux, like you have described in the case of your son. She did make choking noises, too, when flat so that's why we bought the monitor.

Is he putting on weight OK? Does he sleep OK (e.g., for periods longer than 30 minutes??!)

Gaviscon might be worth a try but as a previous poster has said, it does tend to lead to constipation which can't be nice for a little one. If you wanted to try it, then you can mix it with a little cooled, boiled water or expressed milk and either syringe it into his cheek after feeds, or give it from a small spoon - slowly of course so as not to cause gagging.

I would say do what you think is best - you are his mum and you know what's normal and what's not.

If he starts projectile or forceful vomiting and/ or losing weight, it is always worth going back to the doctor.

joymaker · 11/06/2010 23:14

narmada when he sleeps he does sleep for longer periods than 30 minutes and he is putting on weight.

Thanks for your direction on how to administer the gaviscon should I want to try it, though I think I might hold back on that for the mo and see how things go. I'm possibly being a neurotic first time mum

I know what you mean when you say you're worried about him choking. I kept worrying too but the HV said that babies simply can't choke on fluids. I am sure he sleeps in the same room as you - so that should help you feel better. And it certainly can't do any harm putting him in the bouncy chair for half an hour after each feed, although with DD1 it never made any difference to how much milk she brought up again!

ahedgehogis · 12/06/2010 18:37

want to pass on some wisdom my HV gave me when I was worried about DD's sick/poseting.
She told me it should quieten down by the time they are 3 months as their stomach valve needs to strengthen. This suddenly seemed to make sense and DD is now 15 weeks and (apart from a cold causing some vomiting last week) has not been sick for over 2 weeks. And she was projectile vomiting. My record was 4 pairs of trousers for me in 3 hours, 2 changes of clothes for DS (23months and not at all sick) and 4 changes for her.

Morloth · 12/06/2010 18:43

DS2 would choke a bit (leaped out of bed a few times in a panic), he has stopped doing it now at 11 weeks.

They just have sort themselves out really it takes time to learn how to operate a human body!

thank you so much everyone for your advice/ experience/ reassurance. I do feel much better about it all now
