Squirming, writhing, tugging...

Has anyone got any advice / experience in how to handle this kind of behaviour in EBF baby (14 weeks)?

He does it generally when he's trying to poo whilst feeding (nice!), which given he's quite constipated thru taking Infant Gaviscon, happens quite a lot. I can't stop the feed because the trying to poo will last for hours, and I've tried holding him really tightly in to me, but he still manages to twist my nipple under somehow. It can be pretty sore, and I'm worried he'll break my nipples somehow and we won't be able to BF anymore (can that even happen?)

I'd like to find a solution to this if possible, as it's only going to get harder and more painful once his teeth come through!

Any help gratefully received...

I haven't got any advice sorry but no, it won't get painful when his teeth come through. I've bf both of mine till nearly 3 and I've never had any problems with teeth.

DS2 does this during his last feed of the evening, just before dropping off to sleep, he growls as well. No idea why but he does it every night and only at that feed. It doesn't hurt me though, so I don't try to stop him.

Babies are weird.

My DS (EBF 8 weeks) does this when he has wind. I put him off and hold him upright.

i feel your pain with the squirming from constipation from infant gaviscon making feeding almost impossible.

nothing helpful to add but i'll be watching this thread to pick up tips

my dd does this at her last feed too! She doesn't so much growl, but moans whilst she is sucking almost like she is mumbling to herself or telling me off, it makes me chuckle.

She also keeps spitting my nipple out but then opening her mouth for it to be put back in again - this can go on for ages and i don't find this amusing as it makes them sore... If i pull her off completely, she cries. last night i had to get DH to take her for 5 mins, calm her down, then give her back to me to continue the feed.

Sorry, that's not much help, but at least you know you are not alone!

my 3.5 monther does the same and he is not constipated, especially in the evenings. i usually take him off to calm him down before trying again too.

Thanks for the replies ladies, and the empathy! I guess there's no easy solution but nice to know I'm not alone...

Have exactly the same problem- in fact had just come online to seek advice about it. One of my nipples has become really sore due to this and seems to be constantly erect (and painful). if anybody has any advice on how to heal the nipple and stop the tugging I would be really grateful...

apparently this is normal for the evening feeds as the milk supply is at its lowest, so the LO gets frustrated as not enough milk coming though/ milk doesn't flow as it does during the day. a bottle of expressed breastmilk could solve the problem if you can manage to express. if it makes you feel better, i have the same problem at all the feeds, but mainly because of poor supply (mixed feeding DD).

spaghettina · 17/06/2010 15:01

I have the same problem, usually in the evenings but sometimes afternoon too. Can be quite painful when DD clamps down and tugs on nipple. She seems very frustrated, frowning and grunting... Not sure yet if it's a case of slow milk flow or wind, but glad to hear it's normal!

AlbaRose · 17/06/2010 17:32

I have this with DD, I think it's due to colic/wind. I usually give her a dummy for a while and then try again. Lying her belly down on my belly or laying a hot water bottle on her belly also helps settle things.

DancingThroughLife · 17/06/2010 17:48

My 3 week old DD has just started doing this too! Grunting and growling, and pulling her neck into her shoulders. Her legs don't scrunch up, so I'm not convinced it's colic. Also, she does it during morning feeds

I thought it might be down to strong let down after not feeding much during the night (?) or wind, as it's normally better after a big burp.

Glad to know she's not the only one. OP, I was going to give it until the weekend and post this myself, so thank you!
