please help - first time mum with 5 week old ds. bf was going well until last week - got cracked and very sensitive nipples - despite smearing on lanolin like crazy everytime! got very bad after pain with the nipples - felt like someone was rubbing them with a blade. I was diagnosed with nipple thrush and have just started the treatment - has anyone else had this? does the pain improve soon? I'm dreading every feed

i had it too and i remember that pain!! i think it took about a week or so to fully go, but the pain eased within a day or two of using the cream...

Make sure the baby is treated too. although they prescribed Nystatin drops for my DD which aren't that effective. I bought Daktarin gel over the counter after reading lots of advice on this site, which worked much better. It's not licenced for babies as there is a choking risk (it's thick n sticky) but if you put a small blob onto one of your (clean) fingers and rub it around baby's mouth it's fine.

Hope your pain eases soon

The gel is licensed from 4 months old.

DD didn't have any evidence of thrush, but gave her the nystatin drops and I used the cream. Again it took a couple of days to start feeling the relief but I really enjoy feeding DD now, was just a shame to have gone through the stabbing pain :c(

Thanks - it gives me hope that the pain will ease The pain is slightly better - its the cuts and sores on the nipples that is awful though! I went out and got the gel - but ds hates the taste of it!

It will get better RkB - you should see some improvement after a couple of days. You did good to catch it before it moved into the breast, which is even more excruciating IMHO... Defo keep treating the baby though or you'll just keep reinfecting each other - it can be a devil to get rid of, so fingers crossed for you...

Ooh you poor thing, thrush is agony

As well as all the good advice above, it really works well if you have somewhere private where you can go topless in the sun for 10 minutes a day (if there is some sun!) - no more than 10 minutes though.

Make sure in general that you keep your nipples as dry as possible. It is when they are damp inside your bra that thrush thrives. Walk round the house topless as much as possible too and try not to sleep in anything tight like a bra.

thank u all for the advice - i found going topless helped - it's actually a little better now - at least the nipple cracks are starting to heal!

I found nipple shields very good for healing the cracks and keeping nipples dry. It's also more confortable when the nipples aren't rubbing against the bra.

Oh and I didn't find lansinoh helpful at all...
