Please help with research project!
Hi all,
I?m doing research project on feeding infant choices as a part of my MSc.
So if you are:

  • Pregnant with your first child
OR
  • Mother of an only child under 3
I would be grateful if you could help me by filling my survey, it should take no more than 15 minutes. The study has received ethical approval from the University?s Ethics Committee. All research data will be treated confidentially and participants will not be identified from their responses. Participants have the right to withdraw from the study at any time.

This is link to the survey:

Many Thanks for your help

Anna

Done - my long answers as follows (with a quick edit to avoid offending some posters)

Costs & benefits of breastfeeding:

Breastfeeding itself: There are none in my opinion. The only benefit of formula (that Mum is not tied to the baby for feeding) can be solved with the use of a breast pump.

The use of terms like "breastfeeding Nazi" when you are enthusiastic about the benefits of breastfeeding. That you are made to feel like a zealot if you talk about it. That society is so defensive about formula use that they feel the need to attack breastfeeding mums to justify their own feeding choices.

Benefits

  1. Antibodies etc
  2. Bonding
  3. Weight loss
  4. Cost
  5. Simplicity
  6. Portability - I can never forget to take my breast and I don't have to worry about sterilising it on the train

Costs and benefits of formula feeding
Costs:
Infant health
Impact on 3rd world who do not have clean water/sanitation
Financial
No skin to skin contact for baby

Benefits:
None

I am a passionate breastfeeder who would rather feed all day than give my baby formula. She has never, and will never, have it. I feel very strongly that formula feeding should not be viewed as a parenting choice, it should be a last resort and that ALL British mothers should have access to decent, professional and consistent breastfeeding advice and assistance to enable them to sucessfully breastfeed.

If Rwanda can achieve a 94.4% exclusive breastfeeding rate at 4 months , surely the UK can do better than our corresponding 7%
