really stupid question re: timing of feeds

Believe me, i've done a search to try and avoid asking this... but am due a visit from MW tomorrow to see if my 15 day old DD is back up to birth weight. I was advised to feed every 2 hours, which is ok as long as my interpretation of every 2 hours is correct... is it 2 hours after the last feed (which is what I thought from when I had my son in 2006)? Or, for example, 9am, 11am etc, regardless of how long last feed took?

Thanks, as you can see, am probably getting weight and feeding anxiety, as so many MNers do,when the MWs and their scales are due!

It is from the start of the last feed no matter how long fhe feed took

Are you breastfeeding?

whenwillisleepagain · 03/06/2010 17:49

Yes i am - exclusively. Thanks ever so much for this, clearly I got it wrong.

DS lost 6% of birth weight and doesn't seem to have put much back on, but 3 or 4 different sets of scales involved. Consensus from health profs is she looks great and is fine. I was also advised to pump between the 2 hourly feeds. I'm waiting for my friend to return my pump, but am sceptical about value of expressing. Could hardly get any out with my first baby. And as DS takes 40-50 mins to feed, plus time for winding etc, not sure a) i'll have time or b) if i pump, that would leave me with anything in my boobs when i almost immediately have to put her back on. Be interested if you have thoughts. Also my three year old is at home with me some days when not at nursery and I do need to think about making this manageable for all of us. Having said that,
I did 16 weeks ebf last time and am determined to do at least same again.

What ruby said.
But you really shouldn't be given a schedule to feed to wwisa. You've seen my link about cue feeding already haven't you?

It's ok - it's not compulsory to read all the bollocks stuff I post, but here it is again if you do want to.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/06/2010 17:57

Are you feeding lots at night btw? V important time to feed if you are wanting to up supply.

whenwillisleepagain · 03/06/2010 18:03

thanks CSWS you have cheered me up on 2 counts. I've now read the article, and tbh, have been doing what i did with my son - taking rooting with tongue and gesturing with hands as sign DD wants to feed. Twnds to be every 2.5 hrs. And secondly, yes, DD is known as the milk monster at night because she feeds most enthusiastically then, so both pluses in my approach I hope.
