9 month old not gaining weight - HV says push solids...

and that milk is "nothing more than a drink". Is this right? She tolerates solids but does really like her milk (breast). Can't get her to take a bottle but slipping some formula in when I can via a variety of cups. Also, not sleeping wants to feed in the night.

Just not sure what to do for the best. Would be grateful to hear from anyone with similar experience or suggestions.

Been referred to paeds.

Thanks

At nine months I would have thought that she should be mostly on solids, but still being breastfed too?

BM is more than just a drink. Until they are one BM is their main sourse of nutrition. this is quite interesting

if the problem with solids is the taste, how about expressing milk to mix with them? Bmilk & rice is v. high calorie...or bmilk & soft-cooked spud.

That's a really interesting article and completely contradicts everything I've been doing (unsuccessfully) for the last 6 weeks. Perhaps I need to rethink. Just so anxious about weight gain that I'm focusing on getting more solids in (maybe wrongly).

Yes lal123 I thought she should be mainly on solids but perhaps not. Certainly doesn't seem to be working very well.

Not sure what the problem with solids is but yes I think I will try making them a bit more milky.

I did BLW with my 2nd DS so it took a while before he was getting good solid intake so was getting a lot of breast milk at this age
(3-4 feeds during the day and 2+ at night).

Normal for a BF baby to still be feeding in the night.

Have you tried giving solids along the Baby Led weaning (BLW) approach? As that way they continue with their milk intake and they increase their solid intake at their own pace. Might be worth looking into.

my DS (8 mo) has recently not been gaining weight - he still has ~8 bfeeds a day (1 of them is expressed, maybe 2-3 oz max), and is offered 1 ffeed a day too (he sometimes takes it, more often not - but it's there for him)! I work, so am away from him from 8-3, but he somehow manages to fit a lot of feeds in when I'm home

we've been doing BLW, but it's not gone brilliantly, so HV suggested offering him more milk, and more fatty foods too - like greek yog, cheese (he loves babybel or sticks of edam, so they are not too salty), avocado, pasta in cheese sauce. we spoon feed him porrige occasionally for his dinner, and he always sleeps better after it, but I don't want him living off porrige! he loves boiled eggs (chopped up into slices) too, so we make sure he gets a mix of these fatty foods as well as fruit/veg. I think he was filling up on fruit and veg before, plus he's just started crawling and cruising, so is using a lot of energy! hope your DD is ok

Thanks for all these suggestions. Will have a look at BLW.

DD was nursing in my arms and being acrobatic so brief post yesterday.
FWIW DD (15 months) and DS2 (nearly 3) both took a while to 'get' food. DS2 was 9 months then got ill and stopped eating again til 11-12 months he still nurses but eats very well (- but fills up on fruit). DD was over a year before she had much solid food and still nurses through the night and has a lot of BM alongside solids at the moment.
I didn't have the bother of HVs tough as I didn't get them weighed by the HVs until they were over a year.
Hope you get sorted. Is there a LLL group near you at all? They will have books, DVDs and other mums with experience of weaning a BF baby.
