Hi, I'm currently bf my 5 month twins & for the last 2weeks I've been getting deep tissue shooting/stabbing pains in 1 breast after feeding & a painful sensitive nipple. Spoke to a Dr who said it was thrush & prescribed 1 x 50mg fluconazole per day for 7 days. I'm now on day 6 & my symptoms are no better & I'm getting up at 4am after the night feeds as its too painful to sleep & need to disract myself!

Does this sound like the right treatment to anyone? The leaflet in the box says its a preventative dose not a treatment dose. Should I go back to the dr?

have you been treating the baby too?
od you have any other symptoms?

thrush is sometimes a bit over-diagnosed. the symptoms actually are very similar to that of a poor latch, so make sure you're being really really careful to get them latched on properly. sometimes as babiues get older and you get used to feeding it can get a bit lazy and slip, or things liek teething can affect it too

anyway, if you do decide it's thrush then you need to treat all 3 of you

pretty sure its thrush, had major latch issues with dd1 so this time round I'm careful to get them latched properly. Its the same after both feed & only in the side thats always been easiest to latch them onto.

hello

I am just coming through a bout of thrush. I self medicated with fluconazole but I have also been using miconazole cream on my nipples after every feed and miconazole gel for my daughters mouth four times daily even though she hasn't shown any signs of thrush.

my understanding is that it is best to treat orally and topically so maybe you should try to get the cream as well?

There is a good leaflet, don't know how to do a link but if you google breast feeding network thrush you will get it, handy to take to your dr

I have had it for about a month, at first horrid cracked bleeding nipple, shooting pains etc...now I just have an awareness that something isn't quite right following a feed so I am still using the creams.

hope you get better soon.

forgot to say, i don't think you can get the cream and gel over the counter, think it has to be prescribed.

y ou can get canesten cream for yourszelf, and daktarin oral gel for the baby over he counter

bt you're best off getting it from the GP cos then it'll be free!

50mg sounds way too low - I thought it was 300mg for the first dose and then 150mg for the next ten days or so ... BfN leaflet should tell you, or Jack Newman.

Just a sec ...

Jack Newman (though not quite what I was looking for)

the bfn leaflet is great. But my hv said most people neeeed the high doser (100), with trhe loading dose and for at least 10 days - combined with topical treatment for you and the little ones.

Last resort is treating the babies orally, I am going down that roiute now as ds2 keeps reinfercting me, I just can't get him clear...

Get it sorted via the doctor (take the bfgn leaflet) . Totally sympathise - it's bloody miserable

Oh, and drnk plenty, reduce refined sugar and yeast and mushrooms from your diet. And acidopholis? from the health shop increases your good bacteria, or actimel twicea day (but these are less potent)

We are also treating DD orally at the moment - she loves the medicine, luckily, and is always asking for more! The GP was not particularly helpful though - said it was highly unlikely she had it in her mouth without symptoms and didn't think we could be passing it back to each other Didn't even get the leaflet out of my bag!

Thanks for all youir advice, have spoken to the Dr about the dosage/it not clearing up and also about treating the twins and he was not very happy about me questioning his methods! Have now got to wait until thursday for an appt with a different Dr and see what she says.
Have looked at the BFN leaflet and printed off a copy to take with me so hopefully we'll all be sorted as now I think the babies have it (both windy & a bit fretful at feeds - I put that down to me being stressed about feeding & the pain after)
