How to give gripe water?

I'm sure this comes under the 'silly questions' category, but how do I give gripe water to my breastfed 11 week old?

I have medicinal syringes - do I sterilise those? Or is there another, quicker and easier way?

I've been using Infacol so far, with varying degrees of success, but DS2 is still so windy.

Thanks

We used Infacol with dd1 who is now 15, straight from the bottle is comes in.

However, with hindsight she was probably crying from hunger rather than wind and also from tiredness because I didn't realise I should settle her to sleep during the day. As this is not your first baby that might not apply.

Rather than mess about with supplementing with anything, including gripe water, you should consider going to a breastfeeding counsellor to discuss the problem. Could be positioning/attachment. Even if you had it right last week, babies grow and problems can develop.

Thanks for posting. I am going to go and get my positioning checked, would be lovely if it was something 'simple' like that to solve it, rather than having to give Infacol or Gripe Water. He does get tired too, but the wind is waking him up at night - he sometimes wakes after 40 minutes or so from falling asleep, then starts crying straight away. I pick him up and he burps or farts a couple of minutes later. Hopefully he'll grow out of it soon! I do have another DS1 and he was exactly the same with his wind.

A spoon!

SirBoobAlot · 23/05/2010 20:44

Will he take a dummy? That;s how I give it to DS - just dip the dummy in it Hope its sorted soon.

But I need to sterilise it don't I? I.e. the spoon?

I never sterilised the spoon, just washed it in the dishwasher so it was clean...

SirBoobAlot · 24/05/2010 10:30

I've always been very lax about sterilising, must admit. I generally boil the kettle, pour it over said item, then either leave it to cool or pour cool water over it if I'm in a rush.

BertieBotts · 24/05/2010 12:47

I used a syringe, didn't sterilise it. I always thought the reason for sterilising was that milk is a great breeding ground for bacteria, so if you are feeding them something literally straight away, there is no chance for bacteria to grow anyway, and if you've washed it in hot sopay water then there is unlikely to be any bacteria present on the spoon/syringe.

I just tried it for first time. I used a spoon, 5ml, as stated on bottle and pack, after his feed.

He's thrown up all his feed and I mean ALL his feed. Drenched his bodysuit, my top, my bra, dripping on the floor. Granted it came up with a belch.

What did I do wrong?

Thanks

maybe part of the gripe water needs to be given in the middle of the feed and part at the end? (not really sure) but I usually find if the wind/bubbles has gathered near the start of the feed, then all of the feed which has been eaten after the bubble was made, comes up, so I tend to wind a few times during a feed (especially at night) not just the end, to avoid windy vomit.

SilveryMoon · 25/05/2010 06:50

Hmm.IIRC, I gave gripe water on a sppon before the feed, which I didn't sterilise, then I gave the feed, I winded halfway through, but didn't rub the back, just patted gently, then finished the feed and dipped the dummy in gripe water after.
I kept ds1 upright for a bit after each feed to give the wind a chance to come up, but I rarely rubbed as I found that made him sick, but then again, he also had reflux

sheeplikessleep · 25/05/2010 10:48

thanks bumbleconfusus and silverymoon. i'll try winding a bit more (i do tend to wind a few times during a feed as/when i can hear the wind in him or he starts squirming).

I tried to use Gripe water on a spoon but he just used to knock it out of my hand! So I went with Infacol as it's comes with it's own dispenser and is much easer to use X
