How to BF in the heat?

This is probably an unbelievably stupid question but how do you keep baby comfortable when BF in this heat. The best I've found is lying down to minimise body contact but this is obviously not always practical.

She's been really grizzly today and kept popping off the breast and I'm sure its because she's getting too hot - and of course the more stressed she gets the more stressed I get and so on We're very cuddly so I can't put her down for too long or she gets upset - but if I hold her we quickly overheat and get upset together

She is currently stripped off down to nappy BTW - FFS this is Glasgow! Oh, and she's 3 weeks old if that makes a difference...

It might make a difference!
3 weeks is a pretty classic time for babies to become unsettled (feeding lots, wind, refusing to be put down, colic etc etc - it's because they have a growth spurt around now). This may well pass in a day or two.

If it is heat, you have my sympathy. My poor DD1 was born bang in the middle of a horribly hot summer and was miserable for months. I just used to sit in whichever room was coolest, windows open to let the air circulate, she wore just a nappy most of the time and if need be I fed her lying down or I lay down and let her lie on top of me to feed.

Either way, you'll work through it and it will be fine (as per your name).

I don't know, but I will say make sure you drink enough so you can make lots of milk to keep her hydrated. Maybe strip her off and you wear a loose cotton top or dress to kind of go between your bodies and stop it all getting sweaty and horrible?

Rosa · 22/05/2010 18:38

Take a muslin or soft thininsh cotton towel .
FOld the muslin in 2 and place it under your boob between her and you then if long enough sort of drape it over your arm so it is between your skin and hers - it stops you sticking together as it is more you sweating than her. She can still smell you
I used to then lie my dd on my chest with her head under my neck again thin layer of muslin between us . I was /am in humidity as well so it was a right pain.

I breastfed all the time inside and out living in Singapore. I also used to carry her in a woven wrap. Occasionally if she fell asleep in the wrap with her cheek on my chest she'd get a slight rash but that would fade quickly.

No other problems and it was fucking hot and humid there.

Drinking lots won't make a blind bit of difference to how much milk you make

One of the coolest things I ever read is that if you get dehydrated, your milk will actually be produced with a higher fluid content as the body tries to prevent dehydration in your baby. Isn't that amazing? I am sure this was from a reliable source, but I can't bloody find it now, so maybe not

LoveBeing33 · 23/05/2010 17:08

A muslin between me and the baby to stop the sweaty sticky feeling. And go with the flow re how often. Make you drink lots cause you must look after yourself.

Butterpie · 23/05/2010 23:27

brill I always thought the raging thirst I get when feeding was because my body needed the fluid to make milk? I often feel hungover the morning after a night of lots of feeding, I presume that is dehydration. It certainly isn't booze!

NotQuiteCockney · 24/05/2010 08:01

If you are thirsty, you do need to drink, but that's to ensure you stay hydrated, healthy and happy. Your body ensures the milk is still made.

I have had DD stripped down to her nappy and have even been cooling her face with a damp sponge whilst she is feeding which she seems happier with.

Beveridge · 25/05/2010 22:17

This was DD and me last year - she was 3 weeks old and we got that fortnight long heatwave that seemed to go on forever.

I sat in front of a fan to feed her, I thought we would spontaneously combust otherwise! Best £7 I ever spent!
