cooled boiled water in hot weather?

I have a 5 week old little boy who is feeding more frequently in this hot weather. I am breast feeding, he's very good taking bottles of EBM. Several people have suggested that I should give hime water when he is inbetween feeds. What do the more experienced mums on here think?

No, he doesnt need water. Only if you were in a very hot tropical country. They have no idea what they are talking about.

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 21/05/2010 16:46

No, he will get a drink feeding, especially the 'snack' feeds when the milk is more watery. Water will just fill him up.

As long as you are feeding on demand there is no need to give a ebf baby anything else, even during hot weather. Your son will feed more often (perhaps for a shorter time at each feed) in order to get as much fluids as he needs. The cooled, boiled water thing is because of our bottle feeding culture!

goldenpig · 21/05/2010 18:27

Absolutely no need. Fed both my babies thru' hot summers and the recommendation is not to. They get all their fluid from you.

More water for you defo, no need to boil it first though unless that's how you like it

For him? More boobie.

Morloth · 21/05/2010 19:07

Agree with BallpointPen you will need more water - not necessarily so baby gets enough but so that you don't get dehydrated while bubs is nicking it all.

We have been out at park all afternoon and DS2 was feeding every 30mins or so, just big drinks and then letting go, not hungry but quite thirsty.

I was actually wondering what formula feeding mums do in this situation? Do you give them water or do they have more formula? Not looking for a debate just curious.

MoragG · 21/05/2010 19:43

I am bottle feeding DD and was wondering about this today given the hot weather - do I offer her cooled boiled water in between milk feeds in case she is thirsty? We have only tried giving her this once before, and she would not drink it!

IMoveTheStars · 21/05/2010 19:44

You need to drink more water, babies get everything they need from BM, and extra water isn't needed.

nannynz · 21/05/2010 21:25

For bottle fed babies I tend to work out what the amount of formula they should be having and if they are having way more then needed I offer cool boiled water between feeds either from cup or bottle.

Iggisfulloftayto · 21/05/2010 23:08

When is he "inbetween feeds"? I got this advice too, wish I'd had all these people to tell me to ignore it back then!

BertieBotts · 21/05/2010 23:14

In between bottle feeds I suppose? You don't always get a break between specific "feeds" when breastfeeding a newborn. With bottlefeeding it's easier to judge because they will finish one bottle.

Iggisfulloftayto · 21/05/2010 23:17

I was wondering whether people were telling the OP that her DS couldn't possibly need another feed yet, as well as the cooled boiled water advice.
(As an aside, my mother gave me cooled boiled cow's milk at 4 weeks. And I've turned out very badly )

MarineIguana · 21/05/2010 23:19

My HV told me when it's hot and your baby is likely to be extra-thirsty, your body makes the milk more watery. Don't know if it's true.

BertieBotts · 21/05/2010 23:48

Yes Marine, it is true, breastmilk has more water content when it's hot. Isn't it amazing?

Morloth · 22/05/2010 10:24

Mine is definitely more watery these last couple of warm days.

Last week I was pumping out cream, this week it is all blue and watery - amazing stuff.

Quiltingmama · 24/05/2010 15:54

If you are formula feeding is it ok to follow what the baby is doing? Ds is feeding little and often but averaging the day's total anyway. Should I be adding in water feeds too? Ds seems ok but is sleeping a little more ( alert when awake though)

Quiltingmama · 24/05/2010 22:02

bump

Iggisfulloftayto · 24/05/2010 22:34

Hi Quilting, don't know the answer to your question but thinking you might be better sticking it in a new thread, as you'll probably get more responses that way. Good luck.
