Sterilising Questions

10 replies

Hi, I am having to feed my 12 day old expressed breast milk (he;s just not latching on). I am a bit confused with what the rules of sterilising are. I have an advent steam steriliser, with bottles that do not have covers over the teats. My questions are as follows;

  1. Once sterilised and a screw lid is put onto the bottle, for how long will these bottles remain sterile?
  2. As the bottles don't have lids for the teats, is it OK to store them in an air tight tupperware once they've been sterilised?
Thanks very much.

you should have had lids with the bottles. Clear plastic domes? I've never know them not to come with them- I didn't think they were allowed to sell them without.

they should have lids somewhere.

I am totally neurotic and always stored them in the fridge . I should probably be ignored

Hi, definitely no lids. They were bottles from the hospital that I got to keep.

are they the brown rubbery teats?

bluespix77 · 20/05/2010 22:09

Yep! Should I maybe ditch those and buy some bottles that have lids over the teats?!?

If you end up expressing long term then proper bottles with lids will make life easier.

My ds took 3 weeks to latch on. Are you still trying to get your dc to bf or will they not do it at all? Have you seen a bf counsellor for any tips?

yep. replace the bottles. Most of the main brands use silicon teats now instead of the latex, especially wide neck bottles.

So, if I use proper bottles - with lids for the teats. If I sterilise every part of the bottle and then once sterilised put it all back together, will it remain sterile if stored at room temperature until I am ready to express into it?

If you leave it in the unopened sterilizer (after sterilizing) it will remain sterile for 24hrs unless you open it, so leave it until you need it then get it out. Otherwise putting it all together like you say should be fine for few hrs at room temp
