Bugs from secondhand pump?

Please advise!!! I bought an electric Medula(sp) from ebay second hand two days ago. I then saw on net it says do not use secondhand pumps as you can contract all sorts of diseases even if they have been sterilised. Obviously the motor is not sterlised rest is, website says bugs can sit in the non sterlised parts. Should I stop using it, is it dangerous? Total panic have harmed 6 week DD.

I think that advice is more for hospitals, where you may have several women using pumps in quick succession, and also premature newborns, who are much more likely to become ill.

I bought a great pump secondhand and had absolutely no problems. I would imagine the person selling it to you was the only one to have used it, and any germs would have died long long ago, before she packed it up to send to you!

If you're worried you can buy the sterilisable (?) parts from Medela, I would assume.

That's what I did when I bought an Ameda Lactaline pump from ebay. That was mainly because the ones it came with had gone a bit yellow and skanky looking. Yours are probably fine if they haven't been used a lot.

I rang NHS Direct and nurse basically said no problems as long as I sterilised properly and remember they share in hosp. I said do you think it is companies trying to make money telling people not to share/sell and she agreed. Totally annoying as I'm so careful with hygiene this made me feel irresponsible. of course you are right, one user and probably not used for months. thanks for reassurance.

yeah all looks not hugely used, so i just washed and sterilised it and used it as it was.
