Think my anti-b's for a nip crack are upsetting DD what to do?

Have had a nip crack for 6 weeks now, no amount of lasinoh was healing it, was prescribed canestan Hc that didn't work, they took a swab, was a staph aureus infection and was prescribed anti-b's flucloxacillin. Was prescribed them before when Dd was 2 weeks old and we thought they upset her then, now it's worse - she us almost 14weeks and last night she was up 1am-5am a lot of that really screaming (as in voice cord rupturing not just normal baby cries). She is also possibly teething which isn't helping. Anyhow have taken the anti-b's for 3.5days doc said take em for at least 5 days pref 7. Nip crack is FINALLY starting to heal. Don't know what to do, do I stop taking em and dd will prob be fine in 24 hours but my nip crack could get worse/ not finish healing or do I carry on taking em so it heals but DD keeps going mental? To make matters worse I have to be away from her for 12 hours on tues, I am often only person who can soothe her while she is like that and some of the bmilk I have been expressing for her while I am away is prob also tainted with anti-b's. So even if I stop today she may relapse on tues anyhow! (assuming it is my anti-b's causing the prob- shall be phoning docs today to try rule anything else out- typically it's a weekend)

anyone elses baby have this problem with anti-b's?

Hello

Tricky situation...thinking about it I think I'd continue with the anti-bs.

The reason I think this is because I've also had a crack for 7 weeks (and will now be asking doc if it's infected as my thrush cleared up with daktarin cream weeks ago and have tried weeks of lansinoh/jelonet/silver cups to no avail - numerous midwives/lactation consultants have confirmed my latch looks fine) and the long term benefits of it healing fully (proper enjoyably pain free feeding from that boob) would be enough for me to compensate for the short term problem (crying that may not even be linked to the anti-bs).

But then I've got no experience of anti-bs while feeding. And having had 3 nights of nearly constant screaming this week (you descibed it well as voice cord rupturing) I know hard it would be to decide what to do...

Thandeka · 15/05/2010 12:27

Think you are right. Just got back from docs- DD typically grinned and totally charmed the docs and was diagnosed "fine- get urine sample and come back if it carries on". She hasn't screamed now since 4.30am- touch wood this continues!

Also my epiostomy scar had gone hard, red and painful and the anti-b's are helping with that too. So will finish the course and weather it out. Doc said my anti-b's would be unlikely to cause the screaming (though teething would) more likely it would cause diarrhoea (but then she was very similar last time I was on them and stopped being like that when I stopped the course (early- naughty of me I know).

So looks like it is at least 4 more days of potential screaming ahead (or longer if teething!) (and me not being there on the tues to comfort her when she has anti-b tainted milk! )

Fingers crossed for no more (or at least a lot less) crying . Good news that the anti-bs are unlikely to be causing the upset.

FWIW I think my 8 week old may be teething...or rather not teething, but displaying the signs of teething (ear pulling, screaming, hard to settle, red cheeks, gnawing on fist...). As my mum reminded me, me and most of my siblings displayed the signs for months before any actual teeth came though [sigh]. Oh well, this too shall pass

Thandeka · 15/05/2010 20:49

she is just down to sleep. Took us an hour or so (compared to up to 20mins normally) so she is still unsettled but today was much better- so your fingers crossed worked!

Am v.scared about leaving her on tues now though as when she is mental screaming I am only one who can settle her and i am going to be in wales for 12hours. Yikes.

Yup- "this too will pass" is the ultimate mantra. Hope your little one isnt too bad with the evil teef!

Glad my fingers helped! They didn't do a bit of good here as after two good nights in a row my DS is still being settled (2 hours and counting ). At least my DH took over so I can relax and catch up on MN!

12 hours in Wales would stress me out, even with the prospect of her being unsettled. Good luck with it.

Thandeka · 16/05/2010 09:51

gah well madam woke up at 11 (very unusual- usually worst case is 1 and best case 4am!) so fed her and then decided to keep her in bed with me as moving her usually wakes her cept despite her being in middle of bed, miles from duvet and pillows I still couldn't sleep properly as kept waking to check on her, then finally gave up and put her in her cot, but boobs full so decided to pump and give her a bottle when she woke, went back to "sleep" she woke an hour and a half later, fed her from boobs as too tired to get up- they prob would have been half full. Of course because she hadn't had a full feed she woke again at 5am- at that point i handed her and a bottle to her dad who I had sent to sleep in spare room when i saw what kind of night it was shaping up to be- (he cant sleep in day- I can- so if he is rested in the night he can take her in the day while I sleep!). At 8.30 awake again and now she is asleep in my lap on her my breastfriend pillow as I type this! Sooooooo tired! At least DH has gone back to sleep (apparently she was a pain between 5am and 7.30am- I was sooo exhausted with earplugs and being in other room I slept through it! Normally I wouldnt be able to!) so hopefully DH can take her out for a few hours so I can sleep again.
Perhaps we are almost starting the 4month sleep regression? (she is 14weeks today)

How was your DS in the end?

Sounds like quite a night for you! HOpe you catch up on sleep later...

My ds finally went down after 10, Woke at 1.45 for a feed and back to sleep 2.15. Then woke again at 4.45 and fed for ages and wouldn't settle. So for the first time ever my DH took him for entertaining/naps and I got a lie-in! You can tell I've just started expressing . So DS had his second ever bottle while I had a lovely long slepp (well, 2.5 hours but then my definition of a long sleep have changed a lot since pre-baby days...).

It's amazing how fast time is passing though - my DS is 2 months today!

Antibiotics definitely upset my DD2.
My CS wound became infected and I was on amoxicillin to start with 'til the swab results came back and like you thandeka I had staph infection so needed flucloxacillin but I also had anaerobes and needed metrosomething as well. I wasn't sure if it was the combination as I've never really reacted to antibiotics before but I was very, very gassy and DD2 was very unsettled/crying and took ages to wind, particularly at night. I had to go back to the doctors as I was still in pain and my wound started to ooze again so was put on a second set of double antibiotics and once again DD2 was unsettled/crying.
I've been off all tablets for about three weeks now and DD2 is 10 weeks now and is much more settled, I'm sure maturity is helping but I'm equally sure the antibiotics upset her.
So in short thandeka I feel your pain but would complete the course of antibiotics and hopefully your DD will settle once your body has cleared the antibiotics from your system.
I hope Tuesday isn't too stressful for you, 12 hours is a long time isn't it?

Thandeka · 16/05/2010 10:43

Horribly long time- wouldn't have agreed to it if I had worked out how long!

Basically am doing an afternoons training in wales. Agreed back when pregnant and hormones must have made me forget it takes 3 hours there and back! Durrr! So leave at 8am and back 8pm ish. Training is only 3.5hours! At least I get paid a full day for it. Am going to miss her so much. Longest I have been apart from her since we left hospital is about 4hours since she was born (in hospital there were a few 8-10hour stretches as she was in NICU being very well looked after and I was on post natal ward healing after v. traumatic delivery, so wasn't much point me being there all night as i needed to sleep and heal too so I could waddle down the corridoors with my expressed milk umpteen times a day. Hmm would almost rather she was being looked after by NICU nurses on tues than my mum!! haha.

Am hoping for a cs next time- how was it apart from infection?

Thandeka I also had a c-section. I was in labour first though, so it was an EMCS. TBH I felt like I had been hit by a bus - the post-surgery pain is intense and I was actually shocked by it! Even with my NCT classes and knowing so many women who'd had one I wasn't prepared for the level of pain and restricted mobility. And of course it's combined with the sleep deprivedness of looking after a newborn...

The ban on lifting made life tricky, as did the restricted mobility, eg could only go for a walk with company as couldn't push the pram for 2 weeks and I couldn't even really turn over in bed and found getting out of bed hard so night feeds were difficult. And of course no driving for 6 weeks.

But, I had a very hands on DH and useful visitors (eg my PIL visited for a week and cooked and cleaned up after all meals etc). Every day is a day closer to being "normal" iykwim. At 2 weeks things were easier, at 3 weeks I stopped taking painkillers, at 4 weeks I was meeting NCT friends, and by 6 weeks the memory of it had really faded. Now, at 8 weeks, I kind of forget I had one until I see the scar! The scar is very thin and unobtrusive btw (but I have terrible stretch marks to compensate ).

I also think my c-section recovery was made harder by having been in labour first so I think an elective may be different (but Smac had an elective and had problems with recovery so that's something to bear in mind). I know a little about your DD's birth and while I personally want to try for a vbac I can fully understand why you'd hope for a c-section.

Not sure if you were at the Whit or not but they were bloody brilliant. The doctors and midwives involved all came to see me the next day (and meet my DS properly ) and in spite of quite a traumatic birth (and the opposite of the home birth I'd planned) I feel positive about what happened.

OK, ramble over!

[waves back at smac]

PS in case you think I'm an utter stalker I used to post as Caitni and so I remember you from Conception and then the Pregnancy and Childbirth topics (doesn't the 4 weeks and bricking thread feel like a lifetime ago?).

Thandeka · 17/05/2010 08:49

Hey flip/Caitni, yup was at the whit- was mostly ace with some shockers (including a midwife i am making a formal complaint about!).

Cor the 4weeks and bricking it thread was a lifetime ago!

Hmmm c-section recovery is something to think about esp. as will prob have a toddler. TBH I could probably even cope with another forceps, episiostomy jobby, but what I couldn't cope with would be another DC ending up in NICU with oxygen starvation because I couldn't push them out. I know if I do labour again I would want an epidural again and I know that had a massive impact on how well I could push. But then I also know second births are easier but then also second babies can be bigger (DD was 9.5lbs part of reason I couldn't get her out!). Hmmmm will be decision time at some point as we are already starting to talk about the next one! yike!
