Tell me I've not run out of milk

DD just over 2 weeks and feeding constantly but ever seems satisfied - never has big gulping feeds and doesn' come off with that red sleepy smiley stoned mlk face. She also seems starving - does a weird snake like head waving thing when near nipple and then launches herself at it often to come off angrily straight away. Both breasts feel empty and she is equally disatisfied by both.

Lots of wet nappies and a few pooey ones but why is she doing this to me? [cries wretchedly from tiredness]

It might be that she wants to dummy suckle and your boobs are leaking milk. I would speak to a bf adviser but I would not be too worried as long as the nappy's continue exactly as they are.

Sounds pretty normal to me and I really don't think you've run out of milk. Milk removal is the best way to keep your supply up so lots of feeding in the early weeks is vital.

I think the head thing is because she can't see very well yet so does the bobbing around thing to find the nipple.

In the early weeks, my DS used to do the milk drunk face sometimes but mostly I just let him feed as long as he wanted and looked for signs like his hands relaxing and unclenching and warming up as evidence he was enjoying a feed.

There's also a chance it could be a growth spurt...which helps boost your supply so is a good thing

Have you tried biological nuturing. The 'snake head' thing and the latching on and off is one of the feeding reflexes and when feeding in a traditional manner (sitting upright with baby in cradle hold) can actually work against feeding when baby is very young.

Biological nurturing allows baby to use those reflexes to feed in a way that is more instinctive to them.

As to to your breasts not feeling full that can be a good sign as that means baby is drinking the milk as you are making it. This is fattier milk than milk that has been sitting in a breast for a long time (fat 'leaches' out of bm the longer it's in the breast before being removed).

Is your baby having 6-8 wet nappies a day and several poos a day? Do the wet nappies look dark or is it difficult to see any colour difference between a wet nappy and a clean one?

Hello,

My son never had that "milk drunk" look and would never "fall off the breast satisfied". He also never took big gulps and I never could hear him swallowing.

I constantly read that this is what I should be looking for and as I didn't was always doubting my supply and/or quality of my milk.

Don't worry - just go with it. Keep feeding as often as needed and it will all sort itself out. I know that isn't a huge amount of help but it just does.

BTW, my little boy regularly gets that lovely stoned look now after a good feed. A big smile with milk dribbling out everywhere makes it all worth it. Not sure when this started happening but it took a long while.

I think this is pretty normal. For the 1st few weeks you seem to be feeding constantly and therefore your boobs never seem full.

If you are getting the wet and dirty nappies something is going in!

Thanks all, had a bit of a fraught time last night and knew I could rely on you lovely ladies to make me feel better about things. We have both had a nice long sleep all morning and we both feel a lot more relaxed now

DS is 7 weeks and has yet to release my nipple of his own violation.

Left to his own devices he would be permanently attached.

He loves my breasts a crazy amount often goes to sleep with his arms wrapped around it and his head pillowed on there (or still attached if I let him). He has me trained now - I have stopped minding/thinking about it.

It kind of makes you feel loved and appreciated doesn't it dd went to sleep earlier kissing my arm (actually trying to latch on but kissing sounds nicer)
