Mum of the Year

I had a bit of an idea, what do others think? We should lobby organisers of the Mum of the Year competition in include a couple of breast feeding awards. I think Kerry Katona won one year but never mind, it might still promote breast feeding and recognize that its not always easy.

Here's a link, although I think there are a few competitions.

So what do you think, rubbish idea or not?

I don't blame you. I am absolutely passionate about breastfeeding but was ready to give it up when I got mastitis - the breastpump saved our breastfeeding relationship.

How many points for persisting in breastfeeding but baby ending up really underweight?

slushy... are you saying that working class areas dont bf..if you are thats complete tosh

and just because you dont see people bf doesnt mean they dont

encourage people from lower backgrounds.. that is soo patronising

its posts like this that make people say bfing mums think they are sooo much better than the rest of us

darcymum · 14/05/2010 14:44

frasersmummy- There is a very close link between age, income, education and breastfeeding, in that the older you are, higher income you have, and better educated the more likely you are to breastfeed. Link here. This report is ten years old and things are improving but there's still a big difference.

I just wish there wasn't so much sensitivity about BF, it seems like anything done to promote BF is seen as a personal attack on people who FF. Its not.

I don't know if it is because they are working class some are middle class but I live in the valley's we are very close knit community and I know no one else my age BF. There is no support or encouragement offered here. I was not even asked while pg how I intended to feed. Yes I am working class and from a lower backround and so are all of my friends and people I know none of whom bf.

I do not see how being working class makes someone less of a person and from my perspective you are being patronizing by insinuating that being working class is not as good as middle or upper and that that is why mums think they are better for bf.

I did not say that all working class mum's don't bf I said in my area which is mostly working class/lower backround don't bf. It is not just no information I am frequently asked questions which show that no one here knows anything about bf such as why would you bf when you can give a bottle and others can have a turn.

speaking to some of the older generation I get told things Like my milk came in on 3 days and it was to sore so my mw said to give a bottle to ease the pressure. Or I got thrush was told I couldn't feed by mw because the baby would catch thrush. These women are given no alternative they trust the health care system but there is no help, advice or support given other than views that died out years ago.

Oh and for your information I have been a peer support for 2 years and my hv has yet to find someone for me to support. I also asked why not and she told me that she has no other bf women and neither do any of the hv she knows.

slushy06 · 14/05/2010 15:37

here is Wales bf rates my area is about 30% and that is at birth and drops dramatically by discharge time.

darcymum · 14/05/2010 16:11

slushy- I emailed them and suggested adding a couple of breastfeeding categories the other day, no reply yet, why don't you email and suggest it as well?

Who did you email Darcymum I checked the link but could not see who to email.

darcymum · 14/05/2010 18:53

You click on the 'Do you know an amazing mum?' link and then fill that in. Here's the email address though if you think it is worth a try- [email protected]

It would be great if they did included it next time, more likely just fob us off though. Let me know if you do email them and what they say.
