16 weeks 11lb4 and slightly green poos?

Hi, my dd3 has been weighed today - something I have been avoiding! She is 11lb4 so has gained roughly 3oz per week in last 10 weeks. I'm really happy with that, she is hovering in between 0.2 and 9th centile vs 25th at birth, but she is very alert and happy. Up until a couple of days ago she has been doing a good yellow poo everyday.

In last 2ish days her poos have been smaller, more frequent and slightly greener looking, more like big farts up to 4 times a day. If you put them all together they would be a reasonable amount, but on their own it's more like a big splat! It's more the colour that is concerning me, it's not green green, but a definite yellow green as opposed to yellow!

Am I stressing about nothing, I know they can vary in colour, and she has got a bit of a cold at the mo, could that be the reason? She is ebf on demand but tends now to have shorter feeds then nods off rather than big sessions. But there is absolutely no routine to her day or night and she will only sleep when I'm next to her. In the last week she has completely rejected the pram so now sleeps in the day in the sling (sometimes for up to 3 hours but usually with the boob in her mouth) and I have to go to bed with her, if I try and sneek off she wakes up.

I suppose this is really 2 threads in 1, sorry I realise I'm rambling! Could she be having a growth spurt and is there any end in sight to the spider monkey impression or will I be carrying her around and sleeping with her into her 30s?!

Im assuming by you saying she wakes with your boob in her mouth that shes breastfeeding lol.

Maybe its something youve eaten thats upset her stomach abit?

It is more than likely just her cold just making it abit greeny but i did call nhs direct once when my DD had a green poo (im talking iluminous green but looking back it was abit of an over reaction :D ) i was still exclusively breatsfeeing and was baffled by it and the woman asked me if i had eaten anyhting different.

Might b worth thinking about?

OK thanks that's worth taking into consideration, I've recently joined weight watchers so there's a lot less chocolate in my diet . She still seems her usual perky self I think it's just that it's coincided with a weigh in, which I hate! Going to a LLL meeting tomorrow so will bring it up there, thanks for responding tnw x

Hi there

My DS (8 weeks tomorrow) very occasionally does a green poo - so I've been mildly obsessed with what causes green poo! the Nightwalker I would have called NHS direct if I'd thought of it - bothered my HV and obsessively googled instead...

I have a book called Your Baby Week by Week, co written by a paediatrician, and it says that the most common reason for green poo in BF babies is foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, ie the baby getting too much foremilk. Foremilk travels through the system faster, causing the green poo. Making sure the baby drains one breast before offering the second is the best way to make sure they're getting enough hindmilk (if your baby falls asleep on the boob I'd suspect she's getting hindmilk, as it's fatter, so can cause the sleepiness/milk drunk look).

I've pasted below the rest of what she says about green poo. Basically, for BF babies green poo can be normal (some babies mainly do green poos) and the odd one is fine. The only time to worry is if a temp etc (see what she says below)

I personally wouldn't worry about the weight - sahe's gaining, thst's the main thing.

From Your Baby Week by Week
"The only time you need to worry about green stools is if your baby
also has a fever (above 38 C or 100.4 F) and if he is vomiting or
seems unwell as this indicates a gut infection. Again, take your baby
to your doctor quickly as he may become dehydrated.

It's also common for babies to get very mild gut infections which
result in green stools without feeling unwell. These infections often
go unnoticed, so if your baby seems OK in himself then there's no need
to worry about the occasional green stool. Other reasons for green
stools are if your baby is on medication, if you're breastfeeding and
taking iron supplements or if he is sensitive to something in your
diet such as dairy products - in this case he could have other
symptoms such as eczema. If you suspect this then go and see your GP
and ask for a referral to a dietician."

I finished my post in a rush, as my DS had just woken up! Hence the typos and rather hurried "oh don't worry about her weight" type ending...

My DS also appears to be gaining weight slowly, and dropped from 91st centile at birth to below 50th at 6 weeks. I have an (unrelated) hospital app for him at 10 weeks when he'll be weighed (all children in the clinic are weighed and measured before each appointment) and I think that'll be the last time I have him weighed as it'll just stress me out! He's happy in himself - alert, smiley, active, reaching developmental milestones, plenty of wet and dirty nappies - and is long (just below 91st), so I reckon he'll be tall and skinny the way I was as a child.

I've read lots of threads on here and it seems that as long as BF babies are gaining weight it's OK. Each baby finds their proper place on the centiles, iykwim. So my son seemed "big" at birth but that's not his real size...

Anyway, hope your DD's poos turn yellow soon and you can stop carrying her everywhere! My own baby did a green poo this morning, just to keep me on my toes

thanks that's how i feel she's been melting the hearts of the little old ladies on the bus today curled up in the sling with a boob in her mouth and a big grin on her face, it's not all bad!
