Is it reflux?

My DS is 3 months old and since nearly day one has always brought back some milk. He's FF.

It doesn't happen with every bottles during the day and never at night. He winds fine. He's quite an active baby (ie moves a lot).

First some undigested milk and what's look like mucous come back up, and sometimes it is followed by 'coagulated' milk with colourless liquid (but it can be more than 2 hours after his bottle). The second stage can follow a belch.

So is that reflux? And if not what could it be?

I'm due to see HV next week but want to know more before as she's not the most helpful.

Would love to know what your HV says, GuernseyFrench as my 5 week old is exactly the same (although BF). He possets all the time, huge amounts sometimes, but my HV says nothing to worry about so long as he's gaining weight, which he is.

From what I can gather on t'internet, 'reflux' is one of those words like 'colic' that's not an absolute - people call it reflux if baby's not gaining weight, and 'possetting' if baby is gaining weight but just bringing back lots of milk.

My HV said that my little one is just greedy, drinking more than he needs and that his stomach sphincter is not 'tight' enough so the excess milk can come back up - quite common apparently and resolves itself by the time they're about 12 months old. She told me not to worry about it and invest in a lot of bibs

Snowtigger DS will be 'posseting' in this case as he is gaining weight. I 'love' your HV advices Has she also advised you to invest in an overall? lol

DS likes his food too

My DS1 had reflux and gained weight. It causes them alot more pain than just a bit of sick. Pain and screaming when feeding, and lying down etc as the acid is coming up their throat and hurting.

My DS1 had it quite bad and got gaviscon for it, other kids i've know have it severely bad and for well after 1 years old.

If your DS is bringing up mucus it may well be that making him sick. Babies obviously can't blow thier noses so often sick it out. DS always worse with a cold.

DS is not uncomfortable when sick. The only times he cries is when only the colourless liquid comes up (I guess it's the taste he doesn't like).

Missusrabbit DS was with a blocked nose so it may explain the mucoussy milk.

snowtigger The staff nurse who visited us, said that this occurs in some babies as the muscle which keeps the stomach closed is not tight enough at the age but it should get resolved when reaching 10 months old. She also said that the more active they are the more it may happen. As long as he is not is pain or discomfort when it's coming back up, she sad not to be too worry.

So I guess I need to get use to changing me and him several times a day

Sounds very similar to what I was told - good to know it's nothing to worry about, just really annoying!
