I found this very awkward and embarrasing - I fully appreciate that not everyone does but I can't be alone!! Because of this I have just entered the Barclays one small step competition with a possible solution. www.takeonesmallstep.co.uk/Entry/View/3032
Have a look and please tell me what you think. Please note that the garment in the video really is for illustrative purposes only - interested in your thoughts of the idea. And yes, it is a real baby!!

Congratulations on entering this competition. I had similar concerns when BFing.
However, I came across a similar design, (Bebe au Lait nursing covers) which might have cornered the market.
But good luck to you.

I'm sorry, but putting a tent on to feed the baby is only going to draw attention to you.

Can't watch vid, like the idea!!

like a Bebe au Lait?
or a Hooter Hider?
or a nursing apron?

hundreds of the buggers

Congrats on entering this competition and I hope that it works out for you.
My honest feedback is the video made the whole process of bfing a baby look more of a faff than it actually is. Aside from drawing attention to yourself, the garment would need to be washed (and remembered) frequently.
I felt reasonably relaxed about bfing in public (and had babies who latched on easily etc which helped alot). A friend of mine who didn't used the 'two tops' technique (push down top worn underneath, push up top worn outside) to minimise flesh exposure. She also used muslin squares or random items of clothing to cover up with.

Must admit, agree that I feel the slightly odd looking top would draw more attention to the wearer than standard bfing under a large t-shirt. Personally wouldn't wear it.
But having said that, if it gives the wearer the confidence to bf, then great.

memoo · 08/05/2010 22:39

tbh seems easier to me to just wear a lose fitting t-shirt

Thank you for all your great feedback. The real deal would be much better - the one in the video really is just to give the general idea that you don't need to show anything you don't want too. The top would not be bright orange!! and would be far more discreet in its design. Just want to say thanks for taking the time to look at the entry and come back with comments.

Again, second the fact that there are plenty on the market and would be more hassle then its worth - if you have a baby as impatient as DS then you're lucky if you have five seconds to whip your boob out before he's screeching!

Also I didn't like the fact that it was said "most of us feel awkward" and too much exposed? But that's just me.

But good luck all the same, hope it goes really well

I saw a woman use a bf apron once. TBH I couldn't stop staring at her, as it made it really obvious what she was doing. It was rather brightly coloured...

I was BF DS2 at the same time as this lady was BF her baby. The whole cafe was looking at her, no one seemed to notice what I was doing.

I tend to either use the clothes I am wearing or a muslin square if these don't cover enough.

But good luck in the competition anyway!

Bumbleconfusus · 09/05/2010 05:12

They already have lightweight ponchos on ebay designed for BFing with the plasticky bit at the top...
I would say, I myself use an apron and I find it very handy, it doesn't draw attention to me.
So, great idea but already seems to exist.
