mastitis

I have it and was given a 21 day supply of 500mg amoxicillin which i have taken as directed and I still have the infection, in fact it has got worse as now my entire left boob feels so sore and aches.
I will now have to battle to see a doctor tomorrow, and am just wondering what the next course of action may be?
Anyone had mastitis which didn't clear up after 1st course of antibiotics?

I think it's quite strange having a 21 day course. Usually (and I had mastitis about 5 times with both dcs) I was given a short but strong course (5/7 day). It cleared up quickly.
Have you advised about massage/warm flannels/expresssing etc?

Also, have you checked the position and attachment of baby (assuming you're feeding) on that left side? Often, one side is more prone to probs than the other.
Something's not right if you still have it 3 weeks later. Do you have red patches over the breast?

whoops meant 7 days supply (had 21 pills!)
i had a blocked duct initially on the left side about 6 weeks ago....soooo painful...tried expressing but could not do it as so painful, gritted teeth and had baby feed from boob to unblock. This seemed to work, then boob went red and i had the shivers....but then symptoms disappeared after a few dyas, however symptoms came back with a vengeance 2 weeks ago and has been getting worse. Not painful for feeding but distinct enlarging red patch which is very sore. Antibiotics didn't work. A little concerned infection is severe as i left it a while before going to the Drs.

Yes, it sounds like you left it and now, it's worse and hadn't gone to start with. I would go back to GP tomorrow first thing in the am (they will see you straight away if you say you still have it) and ask for a different antibiotic., such as Fluxcloxacillan or erythromycin.

Always feed from the sore side first or you'll still not be clearing the ducts. Take paracetamol if the pain is really bad or you feel fluey.
Then, once you've been to GP, I would find a local breastfeeding supporter/counsellor and ask if they can check your position and attachement. It's usually just that you slightly sit/lie in a different position on one side than the other and the baby isn't quite as well attached on the bad side. Hope this helps .
