Hi,

The Tommee Tipee closer to nature ones are supposed to be most like a breast.

I am struggling with sore nipples and using these bottles very occasionally when DD3 is deciding to feed an hour after the last feed and so far it doesn't seem to have interfered with her taking to BF.

Good luck.

IAGTBF, I've been where you are with the nightmare boob situation and had mastitis by day 8 with my DD. God, I feel for you hun

Ok, first thing, are you using Lansinoh lanolin cream for your nipples? This stuff saved me. It is incredibly healing and you can get it from Mothercare and probably chemists too. Use it after every single feed and it is pure so baby can get it in their mouth without harm.

Also you can take regular paracetamol as well as ibuprofen so keep the pain under control as much as you can, it's exhausting on it's own.

Right, boob health out of the way about the bottle business....

We used Tommee Tippee 'closer to nature' bottles to combine feed DD and never had any problems at all. This was with EBM and also formula. The teat shape is very wide at the base and was fine for our LO.

Incidently, not to stir up a nest of hornets , but we also gave our DD a dummy from day one , as I had no idea that this is not advised with BF babies and she had not a hint of nipple confusion. She loved her dummy and she fed like a demon from breast or bottle. So from my vast experience of one child, now 10 months, I am not sure I believe much in nipple confusion.

Annyy-waaayyy......The only bug bear with these bottles is that the numbers on the side are very hard to see but unless you have especially poor vision, live-able with. It shouldn't concern you too much anyway with BM as you wouldn't usually know how much your baby is getting anyway. If you begin to use formula at all in the future that will be when you notice it.

The only thing I would like to say, is that we introduced the bottle of EBM much later than you are (I wish I had done it sooner but I was completely bonkers very committed to feeding DD myself (in spite of being in agony, shattered etc...). Don't make my mistake and persevere with the expressing (or formula if you choose to) and share the feeding with your DP, mum whoever you've got. I know you need to do it for your baby's weight, heath etc at the moment, but longer term, it will help you get some rest and preserve your sanity too.

Lastly, my friend's BF baby is also 1 week old today and she is already expressing and sharing feeding with her DP (sensible lady). I shall ask her which bottles she is using and post her answer on here a bit later as her experience is even more relevant to you than mine.

HTH, and good luck for your baby's weight gain and your boob health too!

lots of love MOLM x

oh mumoflittlemouse I didn't know about dummy and BF but think it's 5 yrs too late to worry bout that now!!

I also used ebm from day 5 when I got home with DS with just a advent bottle and the newborn teet. I never had any probs combining dummy, bf and bottle so I agree with mumof that not sure 'nippple confusion' exists.

Hope u and your boobs recover soon it's not nice. I took to using cream by the gallon and put breat pads on top to ensure none went a walking changing pad and applying more cream every 1/2 hr and things did get better after a week - could be co-incidence but worth a try?

sparklycheerymummy · 03/05/2010 10:49

my ds had a dummy at 24 hours old and still in hospital LOL.....he had ebm from 5 weeks and has never had a problem....if they are hungry they will get at it!!!!!

No nipple confusion here!!! Though he did know which dummies he liked!!!

mumoflittlemouse · 03/05/2010 11:02

Ahhh, hey a little cry does you good sometimes (which is just as well as your hormones are probably going to have you doing that A LOT for the next few weeks!).
And thanks for no-one pouncing on my NC theory (or creative use of brackets ).

No reply from my friend yet but seems there are some good suggestions here. Best of luck with it sweety, bet your LO will tuck in, no problem.

Xx

Ok, she just answered and is also using Tommee Tippee closer to nature.

fonzerella · 04/05/2010 20:40

Am currently trying to convince 6 month old to take bottle and as she's refused to take tommee tippee, health visitor recommended playtex bottles. Friend used them and said they are fab as her ds had refused all others. have just ordered from intantdirect through google. Good luck and it will get easier very quickly! Remember... this too shall pass!

Fifilottie · 04/05/2010 22:35

I'd also say Tomme Tippee closer to nature. My DD has a midnight bottle of EBF and switches from bottle to breast with no probs. You have to keep the bottle almost vertical though which made me feel like I would be choking her at first...not so though.

H0609 · 04/05/2010 22:49

First I would say do not feel you have to breast feed. I know they say it's best but I think a happy mummy makes a happy baby. Do what you feel is right for both of you.

I breast fed my first daughter for 4 months and introduced Tomme Tippee closer to nature bottles with expressed milk at about 2 months. She was fine and she had a dummy from the start too. Went onto formula after 4 months.

2nd daughter was very greedy so I combine fed from the start with M/Wife advice at the hospital to do this. I used same type of bottles and teats and she gradually wanted the bottle more (its easier for them to get the milk!!) I expressed for a few weeks and then just switched to formula and she loves it. I kept my morning and night feeds to breast for a while but then she stopped these herself wanting a bottle. She's now 1year and loving her bottle still so I don't think it really matters what you decide as long as you are both healthy and happy. Dont get a hang up on "Breast is Best"!!!
