Cheap reusable milkstorage containers

donttrythisathome · 02/05/2010 12:12

Hi

I've just started expressing and storing the milk in plastic storage bags.

However I can't bear the thought of the waste involved with these bags. As in thowing them out after one use.

I've seen some Axifeed reusable milk containers. But I want to build up a nice stash so it would work out wuite expensive to get the amount of bottles I need.

Do any of you thrifty lot have any suggestions for other cheap reusable options. including where I would buy the containers.

Thanks

i use the axifeed bottles. and they are already free to use (as in paid for themselves)
i have a small stash and reuse 3 every week for teh day i am at college (so leave 3 at home for baby and fill 3 while away.)
i have 2-3 days of stash as it doesn't work out to have more than that cos it would just sit in the freezer not being used.

Well, I have to admit to using bags , however I have in the past used 'tupperware' style food containers to freeze small amounts of expresssed milk. You can buy them pretty much anywhere and they cost a fraction of the price - only downside is that you need to be careful about sterilising the lids. I also use the Tommee Tippee Storage pots, but again, they can be pricey.

I used the avent via ones. Can be sterilised, and after I have used them repeatedly for freezing baby/child sized food portions- they're fantastic. Much cheaper from ebay, and brand new.

MoneyNoPockets · 05/05/2010 19:31

Avent Via cups or these are 3ozs or this which is 2oz per shape

Get more axifeed bottles from eBay? I got 30 for £1!

donttrythisathome · 06/05/2010 16:50

I already ordered some Tommee Tippee ones which are on special offer on their website. But I want some bigger capacity ones too so will look at e-bay. What a bargain.

Thanks all.

I use Milk trays, £13 for two trays with lids, each holding 8x 1 oz sticks of milk. When tray is full pop loads of sticks into a zip lock freezer bag, and re-use the trays. Take up less freezer space, and can thaw exact amount you need.

I use little glass yoghurt pots with plastic lids. Don't know if you get them in the UK?

BouncingTurtle · 07/05/2010 09:34

I bought a load of 25ml containers from Asda, think they were only 30p each. Useful to freeze small portions of sauces/purees/soups in as well.

Lots of ideas here. Thanks all.

Donttrythisathome

I have LOADS of small bottles with lids that I used to store expressed milk in the freezer when my twins were in SCBU. They take 150ml each.

I don't know what to do with them and am loathe to send them to landfill.

I will happily post them to you for price of postage if you are interested?

donttrythisathome · 08/05/2010 12:26

Thanks Zuzu!

Have pmed you.

I just cannot find out where my pm is!? Have searched the site! Is it because I haven't paid the £5 yearly sub? Help!

Am going out shortly, will check back later today.

MoneyNoPockets · 08/05/2010 19:15

ZuzuandZara, a PM will be delivered to your registered email address tho the yearly amount makes CAT (contact poster) possible so maybe a email to MNHQ.

ZuzuandZara · 08/05/2010 19:41

Thanks Money.

Don't try this, looks like you are pretty local to me, I am in Lancing.

Will pay my £5 and hopefully recieve your PM!

ZuzuandZara · 09/05/2010 00:58

Still struggling to receive pm, have emailed MN who say do not need to pay to receive pm only to send but I do need to have my email address registered which I have done.

Don'ttrythis are you still there?

I froze my milk in the silicone ice cube trays then popped them out and stored in small freezer bags. The only tricky part is making sure they were set in carefully in the freezer to avoid spillage. This method I found took up the least amt of space in the freezer too.

ZuzuandZara · 09/05/2010 10:46

Aagghh! Having probs with CAT facility! Would anybody be able to CAT the OP for me and ask her to check thread or CAT me again? I didn't receive her original CAT. Thanks anyone!

MoneyNoPockets · 09/05/2010 15:07

ZuzuandZara · 09/05/2010 16:53
