hi, after a bit of advice, DS2 is 13 weeks, exclusivly breast fed roughly every 3 hours, but he goes 6 through the night, over the last 24 hours he is doing lots of very green poos, he seems otherwise happy, but im concerned he's not getting enough milk, based on reading things, I am seeing hv tomorrow as she has asked me tp go back as last time he was weighed he hadnt gained as much weight as expected, im really paranoid, and need a bit of reassurance, i dont want to stop but im concerned he's not getting enough, help plese

my DD always had green poo

i had some tests done (am awaiting results) but she always gained weight nicely

24 hours of green poo may indicate a tummy bug?

has your DS gained weight? what do you mean he didn't gain weight as expected?

if he is going 3 hours between feeds in the day nad 6 through the night it sounds like he is getting enough milk IMO

he did gain weight yes, he was going up the 75th centile nicely and then seems to have dropped, but had been a while since he was weighed, he was 9lb7 at birth and 2 weeks ago was 13lb10, I wasn't concerned about his weight gain but hv says she wants to moniter it! so that combined with the green poo made me panic he wasn't getting enough
Thanks for your reply

At about the same time ( age) dd2 did the same but the green continued for a good few days she was bf and had a very slow weight gain . We did a stool test and by the time we got the results it cleared up still have no idea what it was. I had very supportive HV ( equivalent) who kept me on the BF .....

i'll have to talk to my hv tomorrow but she irritates me!! she os over the top nice , that sounds a bit harsh, but it seems really put on!!

Green poo can come about if baby has an upset tummy or a cold.

he's just done me a lovely mustard yellow poo, and I have never been so happy to see a yellow poo !! :O

Have you had any booze lately?

Mine always did greeny poos after I'd had a glass of wine. And it was dark green or bright green depending on whether it was white or red!

It could be a stomach bug, my lo has this at the moment but she has a bad tummy, doctor said the nappies were fine, there is a viral infection going around (has been for a couple of months) - so the doctor said.

However, when I had problems previously with my lo when she was younger, green poo - I felt was due to baby not latching on correctly when she was teething.

Make sure lo is latched on correctly, and make sure that the lo is staying on the breast long enough to reach the rich milk. If the baby only wants a short feed, try and put the baby back on the same breast on the next feed. See if this improves.

Good luck, I had a first baby who had green nappies and lost weight and then did not put on weight enough the HV and they told me to put onto bottle.

I didn't with my second child and have been successfully feeding my second for the last 10 months. My new HV didn't know why we had green nappies ? nobody could tell me why, I tried the baby on the breast for a few feeds at a time. I also expressed a little off to begin with, this might have helped and baby continued to feed well and the green nappies passed.

I thought green poos were mainly when bubs has just had the sweet stuff? (foremilk)

My HV said to switch boobs more frequently, which resulted in lots of green poo.

BexieID · 27/04/2010 23:24

Erin was on 25th centile but now dropped to 9th. Shes much more petite compared to Tom.

Often happens when babies have a cold - they can't blow their noses so the mucous has to travel through stomachs. It should be gone in a week or two.
