In the title really, have tried several positions and he won't feed from it at all.......he cries and pulls away, have tried hand-expressing a little bit from it to make latching easier but he still won't go on.

What should I do? Thanks in advance ladies

Join a club with me?

Wish I had more advice - but am in same situation.

My DS only latches onto the left so I feed him completely from there and pump the right but my supply in the right is going and I'm fed up of pumping so am just going to feed from the left, Apparently there's a tribe in china who culturally only feed on one breast.

ReneRusso · 24/04/2010 17:27

Does the milk flow easily from the left boob?Just wondering if it could be blocked so he's getting frustrated?

omaoma · 24/04/2010 17:31

my mum breastfed three and says there was always a 'favourite' boob - my dd def preferred my right boob. i assumed maybe the flow wasn't as good from the left or maybe it's a physical/postural thing and she just preferred to feed to that side. i think it's really common. pumping to keep flow going sounds like a good idea. perhaps let him fill up a bit on the preferred boob then try changing over in case it's a slow flow and he gets frustrated when really hungry? also, have you ever tried going to a breastfeeding cafe? i hear they can be really helpful.

I was in teh same boat with DD2. DD1 would feed from either side, by about 3 months DD2 was only feeding from my left unless she was supertired and lying down and I could con her
I fed her until she was nearly 2 using the left 90% of the time.

So no advice but it isn't the end of the world.

piscesmoon · 24/04/2010 18:03

I had the same and was very lop sided. They do just go back to the same size when you finish, so I would go with the side he likes.

HoopsAndBaby · 24/04/2010 22:48

thanks for you replies ladies, the flow seems to be fine, when I hand-express there is loads, it takes only a few minutes to fill an eggcup, I think he just likes the right boob more, he certainly looks more comfy on that side, I think I will just express from left and feed from right, at least then I know he's having a really good feed.......

same here...my little girl is just about 7 months and has fed mostly from my right boob. no idea why, she just much much prefers it. I am lopsided though and hope I go back to normal.

TaffyandTeenyTaffy · 25/04/2010 16:36

I was advised to try the rugby ball position - so baby is under your armipit - it can confuse them into thinking they are on the favourite boob!

HoopsAndBaby · 25/04/2010 16:43

taffy have tried that, and he isn't fooled!! worked for a while but not now!! thanks for your reply though

Just in case there is a difference in your nipples try nipple shields, I BF with them for 4 months and they 'evened' me out by making both boob experiences the same. When I started I my DS would only feed from the right and the HV said that thousands of women only feed from one boob so don't worry if that it what happens but you can see the problems from the thread above.... good luck!

PuzzleRocks · 25/04/2010 20:33

Another one-sided feeder here. I hope you resolve the issue but, if not, rest assured you can feed successfully from one side alone.

Best of luck.

How old is your LO, and were any instruments used during delivery (ventouse/forceps)?
You might want to take him to a Cranial osteopath as it's possible the reason he is one-sided is due to pain on one side. This can often be a result of the whole birth process. Our DD was a Ventouse delivery and the MW suggested cranial osteopathy. It can help with all sorts of issues, but ensures your baby is symmetrical etc.
Maybe worth a shot?

he's 3 weeks and the birth was normal, he fed within the hour of birth and up until now has fed on both sides

hmm....still possible he is feeling a bit wonky. Still would suggest seeing cranial osteopath. I'd never even heard of one before DD was born, but can't recommend highly enough.

Most babies do have a "favourite" side, mainly due to them being more comfortable on that side.
