OK, so I've managed to EBF for 12 weeks and I'm well chuffed with that! However it all seems to be going downhill and whilst I desperately want to carry on my confidence in my own ability to feed DD is plummeting.

I know this is a common worry, but I'm really concerned about supply. DD feeds every 2 hours during the day at the mo and I'm knackered, but what she needs she gets! She has slept 6-7 hours per night for the past 8 weeks, for which I'm grateful and until now it doesn't seem to have affected things.

First 2-3 feeds of the day are fine, but in the late afternoon/evening she fusses at the breast and makes highly amusing but worrying grunting noises! This makes me think my flow is inadequate and it guts me to think I don't have enough for her. There definitely seems to be less milk there than earlier in the day.

I work 2 eves per week and need to express for that, but she feeds so much now that I don't get the chance to express!! Aargh! What if I run out?! Can I use formula?? (I always express at work to 'keep things going'). Having said that, since she has uppped her feeds to 9 or 10 a day, I am able to obtain more volume when I do express, so surely all is in working order?!

She always takes both breasts for a min of 10 mins, max of say, 40 or so. Plenty of wet & pooey napppies and seems well in herself, but getting increasingly 'angry' re feeds (or lack thereof?)!

On top of all this she is only 10lbs! I can't tell you how sad I get when I take her to the clinic after doing nothing with my life but feed all week to find she has only gained 3oz! HV says I worry too much and that this is prob her pattern of weight gain.

Somebody help me! I have searched the archives for hours on this topic and the advice has been wonderful, but I just need extra reassurance. Please tell me I don't need to give up!

Apologies for the War And Peace post

oopps sorry x posted, i was responding to teh farting

is she a bit windy?

sungirltan · 23/04/2010 10:28

hey walkingboob - fantastic name!!

are you drinking tea/coffee? if yes try cutting out caffiene. caffiene is as hard on the baby's liver as alcohol and it can make them fuss as you describe. i found this out when reseraching how many alcohol units/ok to bf etc. i have been decaff for 5 months now and have not had flow/supply problem since.

also are you eating plenty? cereal bars keep you full and are quick and easy

well done for perservering you're doing brilliantly x

KristinaM · 23/04/2010 10:40

i am not an expert, just a bf mum. But I don't understand how you can see milk pooling in her mouth while she is feeding .you should only be able to see her ears moving to know she is swallowing

i wonder if her latch is needing adjusted and if she is swallowing some air and getting windy? that might explain the wriggling. just a thought

OTOH she might just be full/bored/wanting to fill her nappy

hopefully an expert will come along soon to advise you better

Hi Sungirltan..yes, I am just a boob and SittingBoob would be a more appropriate title at the moment!!

I drink tea/coffee but always decaf. Plenty of porridge sorts me out

KristinaM thanks, what I meant is that I can see a little milk around her lips so I know it's there IYSWIM. During the early feeds I can hear her swallowing, but later in the day I can't. Her whole feeding style seems to change - long gulps replaced by a more 'nibbly' approach which again worries me that the volume is not there.

I don't think she's full as she takes the nipple again when offered. Could be wrong though!

I best add that she's thrusting her fist in her mouth at every opportunity and soaking several bibs per day at present so her fussiness may be linked to that?

this might be teeting - teeth can move about and cause discomfort for quite a while before you see any IYSWIM - this can make them pretty irritable!

WalkingBoob · 23/04/2010 11:41

Cheers RB. A good possibility!! Early teething would make up for sleeping through the night

drat it - not that then - poo

reckon it just might be growth period though if her temprement is good and lots of nappies

have a look here 12 weeks is a fussy period - maybe its that?

Poppet45 · 23/04/2010 11:52

I reckon it could well be wind, or even the growth spurt itself, and there certainly is a growth spurt around 12 weeks - my DS used to bobble around, latch on and off, grunt and generally behave with appalling table manners during spurts. I can only imagine it might help build supply? Or else growth spurts make them super grouchy.
Anyway we rode through it and he's still never had formula 8 months in! Good luck!!

Poppet45 · 23/04/2010 11:54

Oooh missed the bit about teething - yep it could be that too, and it always seems to bother them more as the day goes on - we found giving DS a nurofen an hour before the big teatime feed stopped him bobbling about a lot - when it was due to teeth not a growth spurt. It's always something isn't it?

Thanks for the link Sungirltan. Good to hear your similar experiences Poppet 45 thank you, really helpful.

Just got back from doing a full weekly shop at the supermarket with DD in a sling. Regretting it just a bit now
