Moving off comfort milk - how??

My DS is 21 weeks. I have had difficulty feeding him due to reflux/colicky type symptoms so he's been on Cow and Gate comfort since about 3 weeks old (I think). He's also had Dr Browns bottles. All good.

I'm due to go back to work soon and I'd really like to move him off the comfort formula as:

a) It's expensive
b) Difficult to find (only bigger supermarkets do it)
c) Doesn't always dissolve well leaving clumps in the bottle
d) I don't even know that he really needs it now.
e) Each feed takes AGES due to thick formula (and I do have the correct teat)
f) so when I go back to work I don't want my CM to have any more than necessary to cope with.

I started to wean him with purees last week as he seemed hungry but stopped as he wasn't interested. I've moved him onto avent bottles so the feeds are quicker. However what about the comfort milk? He had a normal feed of C&G stage one when we were with a friend and got caught without the comfort formula on us. He drank it OK but then seemed to have belly ache later on (crying and unsettled).

Or it could be teething? Growth spurt?

I feel like I'm all over the place. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank-you.

My daughter was on something similar to comfort milk (SMA Staydown) and I weaned her off it when I changed to SMA Follow On at 6 months.

You could start with one of his bottles a day on the new formula and the rest on the comfort milk, then if he is ok gradually move to 2, then 3 etc.

Thank-you. What were your thoughts about using the stay-down milk? Do you think she benefitted from it?

I think she did benefit for because she stopped bringing up little bits of milk which used to cause her great discomfort. But she was definately ready to move on at 6 months.

I did find the milk annoying with regards to preparation and not mixing well.

She's been absolutely fine though since she's been on the normal follow-on milk. Even if she didn't actually benefit from it, it certainly didn't do any harm. (She's 10 months now btw)

I think we'll be stuck with it for a bit longer. I don't know if I just need to toughen up a bit and just get on with it or whether there is a problem that needs further 'investigation'.

I was very hesitant too, but I eventually did just get on with it. If you find you are struggling to move off the comfort milk then maybe a little visit to the doc wouldn't do any harm, he can investigate or even just give a littel advice.

My HV told me that I could keep her on the staydown milk until she is 12 months, but I wanted rid of it because of the annoying way it had to be prepared.

Maybe you will find that once he has been weaned and is eating 3 meals a day his problems may get better and then you will know it is the right time to stop with the comfort milk.
