Slow weight gain

My 10 week old baby boy has just been weighed and it seems he's only gained 3oz in the last fortnight. Until then he was gaining well. He is exclusively breastfed. I am not sure if I shiould be worried or not. The lady at our clinic who does the weighing is not a health visitor, she just weighs them then you queue up to see the HV - she said to mention it to her. I assumed she would see it in my red book and say something but she didn't look - I had actually gone to ask her about something else entirely so I suppose we were distracted by that. I didn't mention the weight thing as he seems so well and healthy and lovely to me that I can't imagine there is anything wrong and what could she say anyway?

I thought feeding was going well. I suppose over the last couple of weeks I have noticed him feeding a little less often but I thought that was normal at this stage. He does often fall asleep at the breast which I know isn't good but I have always taken the view that if he is still hungry when he wakes, he'll let me know.

Should I be worried?

As long as he is having lots of wet nappies and regular nice coloured poos (pref yellow) I really wouldn't worry. Are you worried he has any health concerns? As long as he is happy, alert etc he sounds fine to me. My dd always falls asleep on the boob (the only place ) I tend to let her do her own thing, within reason - she would stay there all day given a choice! If I think she needs more milk I might try switching a few times just to get extra let downs, but not that often it's quite faffy.
It sounds like you are doing a fantastic job, my advice is don't get him weighed as often! Once a fortnight is too much we haven't been for 7 weeks (only 13 weeks old) and are living a chart free blissful life good luck!

Fortnightly weighing is too often for any sort of clinical judgement to be made from the results, ComeAgain. Current guidance is for babies under 6 mths to be weighed no more often than once a month, after the newborn period.

If your baby is healthy in all respects this weight gain (which is in any case well within normal) means nothing at all
