Expressing Breastmilk

I just bought myself a Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature manual breastpump because it was cheap and want to express in the future, DS is 2 weeks old........

Anyway just tried it (out of curiousity) and found it hurt to express, is this right or will I get used to it the more I do it?

Thanks in advance ladies

Are you able to change the suction power???
I've always used electric and I would reduce the suction on those if uncomfortable.

no it's manual so am I doing it wrong?

IIRC it hurt a bit to start with the first time I used a pump (manual) so I didn't squeeze the handle as far down. As my supply settled and I got used to expressing I was able to pump more firmly and breasts didn't feel so sensitive.

If I were you I'd wait another couple of weeks before trying again. Once you're more used to BFing and your supply has settled it should be easier.

I'm all on my own and my mum has offered to give me a break when DS gets to about a month old, so I would like to build up a 'stock' of milk so she can take him overnight or even for a couple of hours.......I'm tired even though I sleep when he does.

I get really full and start to leak when DS cries, is this the best time to express?

I've got that pump. It was a bit sore the first few times I expressed - as someone else has said, try not squeezing the handle completely closed to make for a more gentle suction at first. These days it only hurts if I haven't got my nipple dead center in the pump.

Like anything new, it takes a bit of getting used to so take it slow.

thanks for your replies, I think as DS doesn't like feeding from the right boob as much as the left I might express from that one and let him feed from the other, will this make any difference to my supply?

Oh yes I found expressing much more successful if I did it whilst feeding but takes a bit of practice!

Put some olive oil in the horn to ease friction. And don't use lansinoh which will create more friction.
