Alternatives for baby oral thrush?

Hi yall,

5week old DD has had oral thrush I think since birth. I have been treated and clear.

I used Nystatin on DD for 2 weeks and it has not worked. She can't have the gel until she is 4 months, following change last year. Is there anything else I could try?

Shall I keep using nystatin, did it take anyone else this long to clear baby with the nystatin? It does seem to annoy her I think.

Thanks x

Hi my DD also had it for weeks and we were also prescribed nystatin which didnt work.

We stopped using it and it went on its own

gentian violet
or grapefruit seed extract

Hi, dd had two rounds of Nystatin which were unsuccessful. We then got a fluconazole suspension prescribed which cleared it up straight away. She was about 8 weeks when this was prescribed. I took the BFN leaflet ( here) along to the doctor (who still checked it herself- am glad she doesn't prescribe based on my internet printouts!) You might well need to be treated again too, though, as it is so easily passed between you.

we had daktarin from birth for DD (9weeks) prescribed in NICU but i believe they don't do it til 4months now? which is weird since they gave it to madam!
hmmmm

We diluted grapefuit seed extract in cooled boiled water and used a cotton bud to wipe the inside of her mouth with it. I also (assuming you are BF) wiped my nipples after every feed just to ensure we didn't keep passing it back and forward. it was only a few drops per oz of water and I made a fresh batch up every feed. I also took GSE capsules for a week or so just to boost it.

We also had the nystatin for ages (3 weeks, maybe), it didn't seem to work and then the thrush went after the nystatin was stopped.

Perhaps just wait and see? And continue to use cream on yourself in the meantime.

Hi,

Thanks for replies...

Still have thrush and yes I am BF.

I looked up G Violet and Grapefruit SE. I feel quite nervous about using something like this on DD. I have read here (www.breastfeedingmums.com/dr_jack_newman_using_gentian_violet.htm) and here (www.breastfeedingmums.com/dr_jack_newman_candida_protocol.htm). The Gentian Violet seems very effective? Where would you buy something like this from? Boots, the Internet?

Thandeka - there does seem to be mixed advice about the gel for the babies. My friend was given it last year with her 6/7 week old. It seems there was an incident last year with choking and the rules were changed. Maybe not everyone knows yet? I have read/heard it is very effective. You can buy it over the counter, but I am too nervous to use it. AAAggghhh!

The issue with Daktarin gel is that it is quite gloopy so people worried it might lead to choking. I think it is explained in the Breastfeeding Network leaflet.

I think though that if you are sensible and apply it by using a finger- or do what my friend did and pain your nipples with the stuff!- as opposed to dolloping it in the baby's mouth, it should be ok.

I bought gentian violet from eBay. I actually have most of the bottle left and if you were local to me I'd gladly give you some. It was very effective but I felt awful giving her it and it effectively makes you housebound because you don't want everyone asking why your baby has a purple mouth. I used a cotton bud to apply it. It's very messy but it washes out easily.

I was prescribed daktarin gel for my 4 week old DS just last Thursday - I had already known it wasn't licensed for under 4 months because of the choking risk but nystatin is less effective so I didn't want that. I think it's because nystatin is made with sugar, which of course thrush thrives on.
