You shouldn't give morning EBM at night - fact or fiction?

My SIL has heard that if u give babies milk that you express in the morning it leads them to sleep less well at night.

Is this true? Has anyone else heard this? If so it's a bit of an arse as I can express loads first thing in the morning.

Complete nonsense.

EightiesChick · 13/04/2010 16:19

Can't think of any reason why this might be true! I wouldn't worry about it and have never heard of it.

It's not nonsense at all ! The difference has been shown in research - milk expressed at different times of the day differs in fat content. This was taken up by some papers recently, and mothers were told their morning EBM would not be good for babies' sleeping at night....that is almost certainly a massive exagerration.

There was a thread about it somewhere on mumsnet, maybe a couple of months ago.

Anyway, you could prob google the original study.

Splendid. I hoped you'd say that

Apologies. Not complete nonsense. Shows how much I know.

For what it's worth dd frequently had morning ebm at night, and slept quite well. Ds never had any ebm (uncooperative) and did not sleep quite well.

mollybob · 13/04/2010 16:49

I think the last feed of the day is best done from the breast as I found DD slept better off the boob than the bottle - morning was the time when I expressed best and that milk didn't seem to be a problem if given during the working day.

EightiesChick · 13/04/2010 20:05

Fair enough!

I still feed DS (15 mos) to sleep but when I am occasionally out he has warmed cow's milk and so far he's been fine. I think it is because the rest of his routine is the same and he really does well with that. He is, from my conversations with other people, an unusually good sleeper too, which I put down to the breastmilk - but didn't know time of day expressed made any significant difference. Tiktok - you seem to be saying it's not conclusive anyway.

I give my 8 month old DD a bottle of EBM every night made up of milk expressed after first feed of the morning and whatever I can express after she's gone to bed ( convenience for me as she takes as bottle quicker than she breastfeeds IYSWIM).
I haven't had any sleep problems apart from when teething/poorly.
