Advice for my friend

BF is currently breastfeeding her pfb dd, aged 9 days. She has commented to me that her boobs are to big for the baby, so before each feed she has to express, but this obv has the knock on effect of making her produce even more milk. Is this the right thing for her to do? Am having pg brain induced ignorance but want to help

I had this problem too - it was a pain at the time - although after a few weeks she mastered it no matter how engorged.

I found that my DD could latch onto big/full boobs much easier using the "rugby ball" hold - then I switched to the more normal one once the first really full bit was over.

Also, sounds a bit weird/TMI, but I also found that drying my nipple off with a muslin if she came off spluttering helped her latch back on.

hope that helps/makes sense - happy pregnancy to you

I had this problem and was advised to express, but only a teeny, teeny bit to take the pressure of and, as Valbona said, until DD had mastered latching onto a balloon!

Also, it's not the size of the boobs, it's if you have oversupply and the baby is coming off spluttering. I assume that's what she means?

Thanks you two, this is my 4th pg and 3rd baby, and I fed dd till 11m so am hoping not to have any problems like this. I don't really know what she means re too big, as mine are much bigger and agree I could still latch dd on with milk-just-in breasts. confused I am not sure but will ask her re the spluttering, and valbona ditto re the rugby ball hold. Tbh I think if it carries on she will prob just give up- she always thought it was "gross" when I did it!

Sorry, realised that my last post wasn't super-clear. The expressing is for oversupply and one issue could be coming off spluttering. You also get that kind of 'bouncing off' thing where the boobs are so full the poor baby is having difficulty mastering the latch. Either way, it's not about breast size per se.

Hope it goes well. Good on you for being supportive.

I think that expressing until you get that first let down is okay? I used to do it until the stream stopped so I didn't choke DD, because it was so fast at first.
