Help - how different are formulas?

8 wk ds is on aptimil and gaviscon for reflux. We've run out and dh just came back with SMA first. Will using this upset his tummy? Do I need to go on a quest for amtimil? (just reducing the reflux puking so won't risk it if iffy). Thanks

I assume by now you've used the new different stuff, Gurraun. Hope it's gone ok. I can't speak from experience, but I've heard insistent claims both ways: that all formulas are the same or that you just have to try different stuff to see what suits your baby.

There is a really helpful video here about choosing between formulas (it's part 3, you have to register to watch it).

Basically, in the UK the composition of formula is so tightly controlled that the manufacturers have barely any leeway at all - almost all of the ingredients, and their exact amounts, are laid down by law. There are some optional ingredients they are allowed to add, but these are the ones with no proven benefit or harm (ie, they make no difference either way).

What this means is that you can choose literally whichever formula you like, on whatever basis you like - cost, the colour of the packaging, your star sign, etc ! 'Cos whatever the manufacturers claim in the ads, there is no scientific evidence that any formula is better or worse than another.
