Made a stupid mistake re: breastfeeding and medication

I have a really bad pain in my leg for the last few days.

Started to get concerned as it wasn't improving so went to the GP. He said he wouldn't rule out DVT but thought it was more likely to be muscular and gave me a pain relief/anti-inflamm gel to use to see if it helps and if not I may have to be tested for DVT.

Because it is topical and not something you take I stupidly didn't mention I was breastfeeding as I assumed it would be ok.

I went and got the gel which was very expensive still not thinking but when I read the leaflet at home I definitely can't use it.

Now it is Saturday so no GP and my leg is very painful.

Does anyone know if there is a gel like this that you can use while breastfeeding?

I am going to try ringing the pharmacist when they open to see what they say.

I am so annoyed with myself for not thinking.

What is the gel? If it is ibuprofen or diclofenac based it's fine.

The best resource for checking what is and isn't bf friendly is the BfN drug sheets.

Hope your leg is better soon.

as greenmonkies said.

however if leg is worse see out of hours gp - you don't want to be mucking around if it is a dvt

Thanks GreenMonkies. The active ingredient is Etofenamate. I haven't heard of it before and can't find much on googling. I'll check that link.

Sorry cross posts needaname

GP was fairly sure not DVT as I have none of the other symptoms. I was supposed to use the gel for yesterday evening, last night and today and ring OOH if no improvement but now since I haven't used anything it is hard to know.

I am going to ring the pharmacist now and see what they say.

Thanks

I think you should speak to the out of hours GP as your leg is getting worse.

The BfN drugline would be able to answer your specific query. Calls aren't necessarily answered immediately as there are only 2 people covering it, one a pharmacist and the other a peer supporter with specialist training.

As it's a cream you'll be using for it's localised effects, the systemic effect is likely to be minimal. Many drugs are not licenced for use in bfing only because in depth research is not practical or affordable. Hope that helps
