Is this thrush? If not, what?

One month DS has light covering of white on back of tongue - GP has said this is a milk stain.
He also (DS, not GP!) has a small bright red sore patch just by his anus - looks different to nappy rash. He's quite fretful but does feed and latch well.
I have needling pains in both breasts after feeding, and sharp sore breast pains at the start of each feed. Otherwise breasts look fine - no redness, lumps or white spots.

Anyone know if this sounds like thrush? The GP has said it's not - the line 'you can get tingling and discomfort with breastfeeding' didn't exactly reassure me that he had any idea what he was talking about though!

That sounds like thrush to me. I had it too and the HV gave me some gel that I rubbed on my nipples before bfeeding. That dealt both with my breast pain and ds's white patches in his mouth.

Has your gp done a swab and checked?

Suggest you ask your HV or a breastfeeding councillor, or even ask to see a different GP.

Sounds like it might be thrush - you have my sympathy as we're just recovering from a bout and it has been AGONY.

I got cream/gel for me and dd (Daktarin) and also tablets for me (Fluconazole). The advice I was given by a breastfeeding counsellor was that we both need to be treated as otherwise we'll keep reinfecting each other, and also that the cream alone will only clear up the thrush in the nipple and not the breast itself. I was fortunate in that my GP prescribed these with no hesitation, reading previous threads on here it looks like other GPS are not as informed. There's a load of useful info in past threads I found when I searched "thrush"

Good news is that a week in, the pain has all but gone and dd's tongue looks almost clear.

Good luck with it

Sounds like it to me. See another gp and take a copy of the breastfeeding network thrush leaflet with you - it is available online here:

Top stuff ladies, thank you! Will try and educate my GP!

Sleepychan is right, I was given Fluconazole as well because the infection had gone deep into the gland. The GP warned me it wasn't licenced yet so he had to warn me, but it worked in about five days. No side effects and such a relief but that might be why your GP hasn't mentioned it.

My DS had oral thrush when he was about 8 weeks and it took ages to clear up because I was told (by the GP) I couldn't get it even though I was bf as he was my first I didn't realise that the pain wasn't normal, I obviously had it and kept passing it back to him. That was one of the reasons I gave up bf. good luck with your GP and hope the thrush goes away soon, I remember how painful it was.
