Anti-histamines?

I get really really bad hayfever. After about 10 mins out in the pollen/direct sunlight I get a rash and the full eye watering/throat itching experience.

My usual anti-histamine is a drug called Telfast (in Oz) and Allegra (in the US) the active ingredient is Fexofenadine Hydrochloride.

The studies I can find do show that this is excreted into breastmilk but that there doesn't appear to be any adverse affect on the baby (is a non-drowsy).

Obviously however I would prefer my baby doesn't get any of the drug. Does anyone know any anti-histamines that are OK to take during breastfeeding?

Kellymom about 3/4 way down the page. A very good source of info. I took antihistamines for 5m a year throughout bfing ds2, and I wish I'd had the advice before so that I could have taken them with dd as well - they made such a difference to me.

BTW, I took loratidine and cetrizine until ds2 was 2yo. Once he was old enough to have Piriton, it was safe for me to take it. I prefer Piriton as I think it is more effective for me.

I think that when you are taking antihistamines over a fairly long period of time, they can become less effective. So, as I need to use them from about April to October, I tend to use each one for about 1 month before switching to a different one. Never noticed any effects whatsoever on ds.
