MrsJohnDeere: any problems with Bedford hospital for snipping a tonge tie?

Ds has a tongue tie and the lactation consultant said the best peasdiatric surgeon around was Dr Smythson (or something similar) in the Bedford hospital; we're in Cambridge.

You mentioned in another thread that everyone should avoid going there. Can you please tell me why.

Thanks!

Bumping this for you (and me!) as ds also has a tongue tie and we're in the area too...we're leaving his tongue tie as it is for the moment as it's not affecting feeding, but will watch this with interest

I know several people who have been done at Bedford and been very happy.

Thanks for the bump detoxdiva! The lactation consultant was adamant that that surgoen was the absolute best in the area. She said she would not recommend Addenbrookes, which is generally a very good hospital. I was therefore quite surprised and concerned with MrsJohnDeere;s comment...

I guess that your lactation consultant has a wide reaching experience and has heard many positive things about Bedford. Unfortunately there will always possibly be the occasional 1 bad experience which it sounds like mrsjohndeere may have been unlucky to have been affected by. Any surgical procedure will always carry a risk, as parents we have to weigh up the risk for our children.

I would request an appointment and see for yourself. We have decided to leave ds's tongue tie as it did not affect his bf and is certainly not hindering his weaning

MrsJohnDeere · 04/04/2010 10:37

I guess ds1 was just unlucky. His wasn't snipped enough, apparently.
Can't remember the consultant's name but i'm pretty sure it wasn't Smythson. It was nearly 4 years ago.

I'll see if I can find out who it was later when I have access to a pc (using phone at the moment).

Thanks for posting MrsJohnDeere. I hope that's just what it was - unlucky. What happened to your ds in the end, did he have to be snipped again?

I'm very undecided as to whether I should do it or not...ds feeds well, it's just a bit painful for me but it's getting better.
I'm more concerned about problems later on, like speech, etc...

Tugamummy - what happens next is a bit of a sore point at the moment. Ds1's pre-school referred him to a SALT because they picked up on the fact that he dribbles a lot. The SALT looked at his tongue and how it moved and said it hadn't been cut back enough and he needed an op under general anaesthetic to correct it (he also snores loudly, can't lick his lips clean, and is the fussiest eater you could ever meet). He finally saw the consultant at the local hospital last week and they won't let him have the op. Apparently because he isn't in distress with it and it hasn't impeded his language skills he doesn't meet their criteria for surgery.

This is all great info - I would have much rather ds's tongue tie had been snipped when he was newborn, as although it wasn't causing him feeding problems, I just worry now about the long term problems of speech mainly that he may face.

His tongue is tied right at the front of the tongue to the point that it almost makes a 'v' in the tip of it - he can't stick his tongue out, but appears to have no problems feeding / drinking from a bottle or during weaning. He is now 7 months old and making plenty of baby babbling noises, so I am hopeful that all will be ok.
