Can I BF exclusively from one breast?

I had my 3rd baby on monday and like his siblings he is pretty much refusing my right breast. The nipple is very odd and he's having real problems getting it in his mouth. It also seems that he is tongue tied and I am going to get it snipped in the next week or so. He's feeding well off one breast and I am pumping the other. I have have seen a lactation consultant who really couldn't help him to latch either and suggested the single side nursing with pumping on the other side to see if it eventually clicks. He seems happy and alert, although slightly jaundiced and is producing wet and dirty nappies. This is the first time I haven't resorted to formula top ups to compensate for the missing breast but he was only 6lb 7 at birth so I don't want to do anything to compromise his health.

I don't have personal experience but know someone who breastfed exclusively just from one breast. She said she ended up a bit lopsided, but that they evened up again once she stopped feeding.

congratulations btw . Someone else'll be along soon with a more informative post I'm sure.

I think it's fine - one baby per boob should work as twins can be EBF can't they?

kikid · 02/04/2010 22:09

Yes, thats why we have 2 breasts, one breast is fine.

My right nipple is odd too! Both of my babies have preferred the left side, and I've dropped down to 1 feed a day from the right side with my 8 month old. Sometimes I forget to use it at all and then when I express I only get an oz or so out of it so I don't think it's doing much work at all. Unfortunately I'm a good couple of cup sizes bigger on the left and I'm hoping that will balance out again when I stop. Productivity-wise there's no problem with just using one boob.

Congratulations!

My boy was 7lb6oz he is now 17lb at 3 months, I am feeding from only my right breast and not doing anything with my left breast. Right breast is naturally bigger full of milk......hopefully when stop breast feeding the right will be the same size as the left!!

I am virtually exclusively feeding from my right breast. I don't know why but my left breast just isn't so appealing to my little girl and she takes very little from it. I fed her exclusively to 6 months when I started solids and she remains on breastmilk so it is clearly working no problems. My right breast is a couple of sizes larger mind you...hope I even out eventually!

please persevere fiveweeksandcounting.
My second child totally rejected my right breast and even though I had loads of help and advise from HV, midwives, la Leche etc I ended up giving up altogether much sooner that I did with my first DC and much sooner that I had originally planned. And it still saddens me now to think about it and it was over 5 years ago .

My DS was the same, massively preferred left breast (think it was actually because he was a molded baby and his head turned to his right easier). Right breast feeds were a nightmare until about 3/4 months, when they evened out and were both as easy as each other.

From what I understand it is possible to feed from just one, but if you choose not to, it might sort itself out in time anyway.

My sister exclusively fed from one side because of a nipple issue with the other. It was no problem. As the others have said, she was bigger on one side than the other for a while but they evened out completely once she stopped feeding.
