What happens when they get teeth??

Just curious really! I imagine it really hurting if you your lo bites you whilst feeding.

I am breast feeding dd2 (bottle fed dd1) and she is now 8 weeks old. Dd1 got her first tooth at 4 months.

I have said I will give up feeding when she starts getting teeth. But, is it that bad?!

The position of tongue when BF means teeth don't even touch nipple. My son gave me the odd playful nip - usually after feeding and when 9 months or so. Just told him him a firm No!

Teeth not really a problem IMO

I bf until DD about 2.5 yrs old - lots of teeth! The only danger time for us was when she was getting her 2 front teeth and she nipped me once or twice, but more to do with the discomfort of teething than intending to bite me, once that passed it never happened again. Some babies will nip occasionally, but can usually be discouraged so don't worry if you decide to carry on - a good latch is impossible to bite from as their tongue is over the bottom teeth.

Not really a problem - the first teeth especially cause no problems at all, because their tongue covers their teeth if they are latched on properly anyway. The top ones come through second, and I have always found that for a couple of days every time DS gets a new tooth it tends to rub very slightly, like he is having to adjust the latch, but it isn't really painful at all (I used lansinoh at first but when I ran out it wasn't a problem), I don't notice it at every feed and it always sorts itself within a couple of days.

They do nip occasionally but TBH it's just as likely to happen before their teeth come in - their gums are hard enough! And if they are doing it too much then there are things you can do to stop them - teething gel on the gums before a feed is a good tip.

DS bit me today because I was stupid enough to offer him the breast when he had food in his mouth that was quite painful, but entirely my fault!

I agree, found that there was a short period of adjustment when each new tooth came in (not biting, just I could feel the tooth a little), then the latch would adjust and it would be fine again.

I got bitten a few times when DD was teething badly and I think she was just desperate to bite down on something.

And she went through a short phase of biting when she had finished feeding, but it was quite easy to discourage it with a firm No. Or if I was paying enough attention I could see when she was about to bite and quickly take her off the breast.

DD did get her teeth quite late (11 months for the first one), and so maybe I was more into breastfeeding by then, or maybe because DD was a bit older it was easier to stop her if she did bite - she understood No perfectly well. But I would certainly say that teeth were never a real problem; I fed her until she was 2 , by which point she had lots and lots of teeth

Never had a problem with either of mine biting, apart from a little nibble when the very first tooth was coming in (fed DS1 til 20 months and still feeding DS2 at 11 months). They soon work out they can't bite and suck at the same time!

anotherbearlover · 02/04/2010 09:26

Try sucking your thumb....

(sucks thumb vigorously)

Did you bite it?

greensnail · 02/04/2010 09:36

The only time DD (15 months) has ever bitten me was when she tried to feed with food in her mouth, so it was my own fault really for letting her do that! Didn't have any problem at all when bottom teeth came through as tongue is covering them when they're feeding anyway, but I did feel a bit uncomfortable when the top teeth came through as they felt as though they were rubbing a bit. I was about 6 weeks pregnant at the time though, so it could have been more to do with that making me sore than her teeth.

BTW she's also an avid thumb sucker and often seems to have slightly sore thumbs from too much sucking - my nipples never have the same problem thankfully.

Still BF my 13mth old. Bitten once only and I think it was how his whole body was positioned more than anything.
