DD 11months referred to 'failure to thrive' clinic

What are they looking for?

She was 4 weeks premature, is definately small (about 5th centile adjusted weight), has never lost weight but only put on 1 lb 4oz in total in the last 4 months. She is bright as a button, crawling, clapping, waving etc so I'm not worried about her development, just her size.

Assuming there is a problem, what sort of thing might it be?

(I posted this in Children's health but it was suggested that I put it here too. She is bf, feeds 4/6 times in 24 hours (mostly at night) and eats well (better than her sister who had no weight gain problems). Most nights she also has a bottle of formula just to save me from one wake up call!)

Thanks in advance.

She sounds very cute Fowl!

Can't say what they might be looking for, but maybe there's just some reassurance in giving her a thorough once-over? My friend's DD, also bf, was referred to such a clinic; indeed she fell off the bottom of the growth charts and some months didn't put on any weight at all. Doctors just offered advice about high calorie foods etc. Two years later all absolutely fine- just a small child! Her parents are petite too.

There is a weight gain obsession drive in our area at the moment following some cock ups with bf support. Hopefully they will look at the whole picture and not just the weight gain - milestones, developmental stages etc. DD never satisfied my HV because she never pushed above the bottom centile. Probably because all the women on her dad's side were tiny and I am not exactly big either.

Worth getting them off your back checking there are no issues, but I assume, as her mother, you are pretty in tune with your baby and would have noticed if something were amiss.

I hope (and feel fairly sure) that all is well.

Thanks both of you, how perceptive you are domestic, she is indeed exceptionally cute . I am pleased that she is getting a once over, weigh-ins have become a bit stressful, not knowing whether she will have put on any weight or not. At least this way we might get to the bottom of whether there is something wrong or not. She does come from a family of very petite women on her father's side and her elder sister is pretty much a titch too, just not quite so titchy!

Its good to know that other children are tiny too! All my friends kids are so much bigger than her...Ah the curse of comparisons, I ought to know better!
