Which Breast Pump should I buy?

My DD is 6 weeks old & I'm thinking about trying to express so that I can go out at some point in the evenings in the future!

There seem to be loads of breast pumps all at different prices, has anyone got any tips or favourites - any advice welcome.

Hello!

We've noticed this thread is quite old and some of the product recommendations are a little out of date. We've spent weeks speaking to parents and testing out breast pumps. Read our breast pump reviews for a list of the best products on the market.

Hope this helps! Flowers

I had the medela swing and it was great - I've just sold it on e-bay, might be worth having a look for one there though, they are expensive new but once washed and sterilised, I can't see the problem in getting second hand.

Have you looked at Mumsnet reviews?

Enjoy your evenings out!

i have not been able to use an e;ectric pump either time

i highly recommend the tommee tippee closer to nature manual pump

I'm very happy with the Avent manual pump.

Medela Swing, here. Saved my sanity when I was expressing after every feed. Medela manual pump was good, but too much effort for the amount of expressing I had to do (and not exactly cheap, either).

The Medela Harmony is a really good manual pump; I wouldn't bother with electric unless you're pumping for twins! It's small, quiet and easy to use. I went to the cinema with friends and actually pumped out a full bottle without anyone noticing..!

Do not buy the Tommee Tippee Closer To Nature electric pump. I had a right time with it, I could hardly get anything out with it and the little milk I could get then went up the tube most times so I had to stop and clean it all out. God I hated that pump. I thought it was me till I tried a hospital one.

with DD1 i was lent an avent electric pump- was the best pump i ever used. So much so I invested in one for DD2- it has a soft cushioned bit and massages your breast as opposed to just pulling the nipple in/out like the manual ones.I tried a tommee tippee manual pump and thought it was horrid.
Plus i found with manual ones i'd be there forever and not get anything out. With the avent electric one i plugged myself in for 10mins each boob! They are pricey, maybe buy a second hand one on ebay?

I've used quite a few different ones due to having premmie babies but have to say I now use an Avent manual pump and love it- I only need to express enough for one feed a day (when at work) and it is quiet, easy to use & very portable, and the massaging cushion is great (as have had probs with cracked nipples this time, and it's gentler than many other pumps). It usually only takes me 15 mins to get 6oz in the morn when I'm fullest and I can usually managed to do it one-handed so can get on with other things with the other!

Double electric pumps are great when you need to do a lot of expressing though.

Another vote for the Avent manual pump- I got mine with a bag, spare bottles, ice packs etc from kiddicare for £29 and it's been well worth it.
