How often do babies need milk (BF or bottle) at say...8/9 months?

I have a nearly 4 month old DD.

Like DS, has reflux and I now discover she has a dairy intollerence.

Needless to say, neither have been a joy to BF (anyone who has fed a baby with reflux will know what I mean).

DH gave DS 1 bottle every evening to get a break from one feed and an early night. EBM at first then formula by 3 months.

I fed him until 5 months, weaned him onto solids and off the breast. Happy baby - even happier mum!

I remember by 8 months (ish) he just got one bottle in the morning and one at night and his solids inbetween.

DD has always had issues with bottles. We gave her a bottle of EBM every evening from 2 weeks but if we even missed one night, the next night sh'e refuse.

then we changed to formula at 3 months and thats when I discovered her intollerence.

She is now exclusivly fed and im on a dairy free diet.

I hate hate hate it and dairy free diet is hard going. Only thing that keeps me going is thinking she will only need the two feeds once well established on solids.

Am I wrong? Is it different when BF an older baby? What do bottle feeders give by that age?

I don't want major pro feeding/demand feeders giving me guilt complexes. Ive been through hell feeding both, neither ever got easier as the reflux makes feeding horendous and demand feeding makes reflux worse (not allowing digestion of one feed before beginning another - bad consequenses).

Ive done my best and was looking forward to giving up once she was on solids but she hates the dairy free formulas so im stuck with it until she grows out of BF.

Sitting nervously awaiting the answer!!

hate to be the bearer of bad news, and am probably not doing it right myself but dd2 is 7 1/2 mo and has many feeds. I am trying to wean her onto bottles as i am going back to work after Easter but she will only take a few ounces at a time and is bf on top of that anyway. I am currently still on about 7 feeds a day/night and she blw for 3 meals most days.

congrats on carrying on despite the reflux, both of mine have/had it and it is tough. DD2's is coming back now with the formula, it's not fun.

my lo's were bottle fed and were down to 4 day feeds at 8 months which dropped to 3 around 9 months.

dd is 8 months old and bf (also has reflux). She has about 5/6 milk feeds. Also hoping she drops some soon. Guess she needs to have more solids before she will drop feeds.

Hi When
I thought the same thing too. I am on my 3rd DC (I posted about, refusing bottle) but the first time I have ever BF this long so assumed by 9m we would be on a morning and night only feed. SOOoooo wrong.

He now has chicken pox and feeding even more!

Not sure what to do about it until he gets better.

By 8/9 months my DS (silent reflux) was having 3 bottles a day and 3 meals a day.

Milk was given at 7am, 2.30pm and 7pm (tbh, I am pretty sure this was the milk timings at about 6 months too).

Good luck

I am actually looking forward to sleeping withOUT a bra and on my tummy. Only a few more months to go til we hit a year I guess.....

AppleAndBlackberry · 01/04/2010 18:28

My nearly 8 month old has about 3 breast feeds a day at the moment.

I sleep without a bra - I can't stand sleeping with a bra on. Until lately leaking hasn't been a problem - now it only happens if dd goes longer than 5 hours between feeds and only when feeding (I use a muslin cloth and hold it over one boob while she feeds from the other - sorry if tmi ).
