BF baby sleeping over 5 hours

DS is 4 weeks old and a good feeder. He's also quite big (8lb 15 born, now probably about 10lb) and at night will sometimes go for over 5 hours at a time between feeds.

I've been waking him up after 5 hours because I worry that he should be feeding more regularly than this but am I just being neurotic? I read somewhere that for the first couple of months you shouldn't let a BF baby go too long and with my DD this was never a problem!

During the day he feeds every 2-3 hours, sometimes goes 4 hourly. Any BF experts got any opinions?

Is he gaining weight? Is he bright and alert during the day? Are you getting plenty of wet nappies?

If you answer yes to these questions then I wouldn't wake him for a feed in the night, let him sleep until he wakes you.

Not an expert! But feeding my 5th. She started sleeping 5 hours at a stretch at 2 weeks old. I didn't wake her and she's fine and healthy and still exclusively breastfed at 5 months.

Agree with Ineedsomesleep. If your baby shows all those good signs, be led by him.

Thank you both. Thought I was being a bit over anxious so good to hear I just need to chill out.

when I had DD1 she was 10lb4 and slept for 5 hours - I asked the MW on the ward and was told not to waken a sleeping baby - she would soon tell me when she wanted fed

wet nappies & gaining weight will let you know

sounds like you're doing a great job, well done and congratulations on your lovely DS

dd2 was a biggish baby and started sleeping for stretches of 7 hours when she was 3 weeks old. The hv told me I would be a fool to wake her. She was right and I made the most of it until dd2 got to 11 weeks and stopped sleeping through. Ho hum.

Thanks! Left him alone last night and he went 6 hours - I'll enjoy it while it lasts.
