Would appreciate some advice from anyone in the know...

DS 5 months, started with Breast Feeding which unfortunately had to stop after a few weeks. Since then Tried SMA for a couple of months but had loads of vomiting both straight after feeds and hour or so later + green poo.

Someone suggested aptamil which we switched to for another 6 weeks but still vomiting quite a bit and explosive and very runny poos.

Have now switched to Hipp Organic for 1 week and poo great but still pretty vomity.

Dr said if vomiting not bothering him which it doesn't seem to, then it's not reflux and don't worry about it, but someone else has said try cow and Gate comfort as it can't be nice for him being sick all the time.

Should I give it some more time to settle or
switch again??? Not sure what to do for the best.

Maybe its lactose intolerance?

thisisyesterday · 29/03/2010 20:59

some babies are just sicky, and I agree with your GP- if it isn't bothering him then don't worry about it.

MrsHappy · 29/03/2010 21:04

I suspect (but have no evidence for this!) that bottles lead to the baby drinking more than he otherwise might if he had to work for the milk. So, maybe your baby is spitting up because he is drinking more than he can handle? My DD1 certainly was a whole lot more sicky once she went onto bottles.

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 29/03/2010 22:25

Mrs Happy - yep, I thought that too about bottles as he was never sick when i was feeding him myself.
The immediate after milk puke I think is that as it doesn't happen every bottle,... it is just the watery digested stuff (proper vomit) that comes up later which bothers me. Still, will be weaning soon so hopefully it will improve then?

Will persevere with the Hipp organic for now, thanks for replies.

Perhaps try a smaller teat (i.e. 0-3 m/o rather then 3-6 m/o size) or stagger the feed (you have an hour to use the milk in the bottle) by winding or changing the position of baby (cradled in arms to sitting on lap to supported on knees to ??) but no jiggling as that can make them sick. Maybe use a dummy after a feed if you think he still is 'sucky'. Is DS in any discomfort before being sick? How does his sick look smell? Is it curdled/acidy/sour or is it quite like fresh milk?

I would imagine when you were bfing a feed lasted a lot more than a few minutes it took my DD1 to hoover down a bottle plus baby could push your nipple out of his mouth/turn his head away/switch to non-nutritive suckling whereas with a bottle the milk keeps coming regardless of sucking or not.

When DD1 was tiny if she would gobble a bottle down even though she'd just had a bfeed and it almost always ended up all over the floor - she did go on to have really bad reflux by about 4 weeks old though - but the post bottle puke wasn't accompanied by the refluxy screaming and writhing and didn't stink of acid. I got some of her sick in a paper cut once and it stung to high heaven and could strip the colour out of her clothes like bleach .

Hope you and DS find a solution soon (though like with many things baby related the solution may well be time)

Lilybunny · 30/03/2010 10:12

I would recommend the Dr Brown's bottle for vommity babies, they seem to swallow much less air. I've seen them settle lots of babies, try one and see how you get on.

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 30/03/2010 12:45

TS - ow ow ow! to puke in paper cut!
he seems to be fine before vomiting it just comes up by itself between feeds when he's picked up or if he's just woken from sleep. its clear fluid with white curdled bits in, and smells of proper sick.
Any straight after feed is just milk straight back (not projectile), which is why i'm not worried about that too much. Hope time will help.

Lily - thanks for suggestion, will try one, and see if that works.

icantbelieveimnotbitter - my 10 week old has exactly the same as you describe - watery sick a couple of hours after feeding. Although I've noticed it doesn't seem to happen during the night. Doen't seem to bother him, sometimes he even smiles afterwards! It has been going on since he was about 6 weeks old.
I too have asked hv & docs, who say not to worry as long as he isn't dehyrated.

He has also always been on SMA - are you still waiting to see if the HIPP has made any difference?

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 31/03/2010 14:31

Yep Rob1n, am sticking with the HIPP for the time being.

Can't believe the difference it's made with his poos. No longer have to change his clothes after each one.
Good day today, no vomit at all so far, not even straight after feeds, so fingers crossed.

Someone at DH's work suggested the HIPP as her DD was very vomity and stopped after swapping to HIPP.

HIPP does not have LCPUFAs in it - I think. Unless they've changed. This could be making the difference.

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 31/03/2010 16:08

tiktok - LCPUFAs??

www.library.nhs.uk/cam/ViewResource.aspx?resID=236588 for LCPUFAs info.

hazeyjane · 31/03/2010 16:17

I switched to Hipp, because my dd2 was having explosive diahhroea with Aptamil. When I rang Aptamil they said that the runny poo was due to the prebiotics, which had a similar action on the gut as breastmilk. It sounded like guff to me, and as she was literally exploding with greenish eggy smelling watery poo, I switched to the only formula that didn't have prebiotics, which was Hipp.

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 31/03/2010 16:25

Thanks, have had a look. Hipp does contain 3&6 LCP's (it's on the front of the box).

Hipp and sma Gold do not seem to be much different looking at the ingredient lists, but definately have different effects on DS. It's a mystery.

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 31/03/2010 16:29

Hazeyjane - I know, the Aptamil was awful. Can't believe I stuck with it so long . He exploded each time as well and it smelt of vinegar
Finally at 5 months he's having normal french mustard coloured soft baby poo. Hurrah.

Oops, I meant prebiotics when I said LCPUFAs....I think Hipp does not have prebiotics.

icantbelieveimnotbitter · 31/03/2010 17:18

Nope, not that either. HiPP box says 'contains praebiotik' which is oligosaccharide - same thing as in Aptamil. Maybe there's just less of it in the HiPP.
Mystery continues, but still happy with outcome so far

I see they have changed the ingredients of Hipp since I had dd2, when it definitely didn't contain prebiotics or LCPs - which really annoys me. I just don't believe having runny poo = breastfed poo = must be better.

I wonder if there is any formula which doesn't have them.

I will also have to hope that I am more successful bfeeding dc3 (due in July) than I was with dd1 and 2.

Nicolaboats · 31/03/2010 20:33

I think that the new stuff they've added is in breastmilk and therefore meant to be a good thing?
