2 week old falling asleep at breast

Hi my 2-week old has been feeding brilliantly (every 2 - 3 hours) up until last day or so when he has started to get really "lazy" in the way he feeds, often falling asleep within just a few minutes of going on to the breast. I have tried everything to keep him awake (stripping him down to nappy, stimulation by pulling at his arm / stroking feet, gently pushing at his chin to keep him suckling) these things work up to a point but then he will come off the breast of his own accord, stay asleep in my arms for a few mins before howling for more as though he never had a feed!

Is this normal? I don't think my supply is low as if I hand express on the boob he comes off a lot of milk squirts out...

Any ideas as it is starting to drive me crazy!!

Hiya, whats the nappy situation been like? How many wet / pooey nappies? Is he showing any signs of jaundice? Is his weight gain ok?

some people notice their babies sleep alot more when having a growth/development spurt.
I don't think it'll last long,as long as he can go on whenever he wants he should pick up again soon.

Mine was similar. Just stick him back on when he howls! And keep some DVDs / Sky +'d programmes stacked up so you can just let him do his thing. He's only 2 weeks, things will settle down but in the meantime just keep putting him back on when he wants.

TSM, If you're getting lenty of wet/solied nappies, and your baby has no sign of jaundice then fine, If you have any concerns then for a 2 week old baby you should seek RL help, . After all, we can't see your baby!

Thanks a lot for the replies all, he is doing plenty of nappies and gaining weight so was not yet overly worried about him per se, just wondering if others in similar situation! But he seems to have snapped out of it a bit and back to gulping it down with gusto on some feeds plus is having one or two nice alert periods a day now.

Sadly it is difficult to do the whole relax in front of the tv and feed on and off all day thing as we also have a 16 month old! So any tips for keeping DD happy while nursing DS equally welcome

Glad to hear all is good on the growing and nappies front

How about a special bag of toys that you can play with together while you feed?

little books, that sort of thing? My dd1 was 20 months when dd2 was born, her favourite thing was a tiny dolly that came with a car seat and nappy. She would nurse her dolly etc while I fed mine Be prepared for your 100th repetition of the gruffalo though

Unfortunately my son became a huge fan of CBeebies when my 2nd DS was born. I must admit it was a bit of a life saver at times!

We did go to the park lots to ensure that he ran out all that surplus energy so he would want some quiet activities once home
