How would you know you were pg if you were ebf?

Not that I think I could even BE pg (unless it was some form of miracle...) but how would I know without having the late period thing? It occurred to me the other morning when I was feeling sick. Also, do pg tests work when ebf, or do the hormones somehow bugger it up?

I am someone who tends to panic and think they are pg if half an hour late (and I have irregular periods, so basically spend half my life panicking about pregnancy) so now I am worried that I am magically pregnant somehow...

If you don't have your period back, you're very unlikely to get pg (my GP says completely impossible, but I know this is a bit controversial). Otherwise I guess you'd have to wait till your belly started growing, though. Tests do work. But I suspect you are panicking!

I became pregnant while ebf & using a condom! Period hadn't returned.

I knew because I developed that amazing sense of smell..I could smell dds wet nappy from the other room. I also started to feel nauseous, not MS type sick, just urg sick.

Did a test to 'rule pregnancy out' to reassure & it turned into the worse day of my life!

My 2nd and 3rd DC were conceived without any periods in between. I was EBF. Ovulation comes first, then if no implantation you get period.
With DS2 I knew I was pg because I felt queasy and then started vomiting and was very very tired.
With DD I became very emotional and very tired ( the vomiting didn't start til a bit later).

Well, I fell pregnant with DD when ds was 8 months old, he was barely on solids, due to a uti he got at 6 months old, a couple of days after he started solids, so he went off them and refused to touch them again for months. We had spent two and a half years trying to fall pregnant the first time too.

I had not had a period.

What made me think I might be pregnant, was when Ds picked up a leaf and went to lick it! (and after the slug licking incident a cpl months earlier which had not affected me at all) the retching that followed the attempted Leaf licking made me suspect! I spent most of my first pregnancy retching, I only vomited once, but retched a lot at disgusting things. I was 9 weeks pregnant with dd when we found out about her.

Argh, this isn't reassuring me! OK, I KNOW I can't be pregnant, as we haven't had sex for at least three weeks (which is an age for us, but long working hours, two kids, me spending time visiting my parents and everyone being ill at one point or another means it just hasn't happened) so there is no biological way I could be pregnant, and I am just tired because of the reasons listed above and feel sick because I am getting better from a stupid virus, but still!
It would be an actual disaster if I got pregnant, DP is getting the snip as soon as he gets up the courage. I had bad SPD last time and would apparently be in a wheelchair and the birth would be very risky due to having had a funny section the first time and a planned section the next time and we would have to move out of our lovely house and...argh!
...but there is actually no way I could be pregnant. Good to know what to look out for if our sex life does pick up though.

slug licking - nooooooo!!!!!!

JackiePaper · 24/03/2010 20:52

one of my friends got pregnant whilst ebf her dd (her dd was 3 months old at the time and feeding really frequently) she didn't realise until she felt the baby move she was 18 weeks pregnant when she realised!

FacePalm · 25/03/2010 00:45

camflower - Luckily there has never been a repeat slug licking attempt! What I get for taking the child out into the garden in the summer!

camflower · 25/03/2010 13:27

there aren't many things (apart from the obvious) that you'd less like your child to lick!

FacePalm · 25/03/2010 15:03

true! He had been happily playing away on the blanket, I turn to pour a drink, turn back, and he has hold of the ruddy thing! I am going to include it in a speech on his wedding day!

MathsMadMummy · 25/03/2010 15:07

this isn't reassuring me either! we're using condoms (on the very rare occasion we can have sex!) but I keep getting paranoid about pregnancy... really need to get my arse in gear and sort out the implanon thingy.

have occasionally considered doing a test just in case, but I know that even though we adamantly DO NOT want any more kids, I'd still be upset if it was negative!!!

camflower · 25/03/2010 19:10

That is an excellent idea facepalm - but might put the bride off kissing him! I tell you I am SO going watching out for slugs this summer. It is just the sort of thing my ds (7 months) would do, he grabs everything within reach!

camflower · 25/03/2010 19:11

Of course I mean going to watch out for (bloody iPhone)

peasandbeans · 25/03/2010 19:16

I conceived dd2 whilst ebf. I think I first noticed when I started getting morning sickness.

I do find however that for some reason (hormone perhaps) I often feel slighhtly nauseous when breast feeding, so its not a particularly reliable sign for me.

Only way to be really sure is to do a pregancy test, or wait long enough for the bump to get fat, and the baby to start kicking...

SaintGeoff · 25/03/2010 19:22

How does not having had sex for 3 weeks mean you aren't pregnant? If you've had unprotected sex, you may be pg, ebf or not.

You can do a test. EBF will not affect the result.
