2 week old vomiting entire feed (bf)

My 2 week old has been vomiting her entire feed every night (occasionally during the day too)
when i say the whole feed the amount that comes up really is quite shocking... soaks her, me, it comes out her nose as there is so much and so fast. I am really quite distressed by it.

Do you think this is reflux or could it be because she is taking too much at one go?

I have started limiting her to 10mins on each side, then a rest then offering more and repeating until shes had enough, not sure if its working or not.

What can it be?? What can i do??
I find it so hard at night as i start feeding her at say 11ish, she vomits, needs feeding again, then settling and i'm up with her till 3 or 4 when she might go down for another hour or 2. I am so tired.

is your MW still coming out? is your dd having wet & dirty nappies? what's her weight gain like?

stickybean - that sounds really difficult. It needs a health visitor's/doctor's opinion, I think. Sometimes, this can be an extreme normal - baby is basically fine, just getting used to feeding. But it needs checking out, definitely. Good option to do what you are doing re trying to insert a break in the feeds. Other option would be to see if you have over-supply - check archives for this, as we have discussed it lots.

The midwife is still coming, her weight gain is fine... more than fine actually, very good and she has lots of wet and dirty nappies.
That makes me think oversupply is the problem and she's just overwhelmed by it.

The midwife said as it was only once or twice a day and not every feed not to worry, especially as she is otherwise completly fine.

will go and search over supply now

Does she have a cold at all? My DS was vomiting once a day for a few days (when 5 weeks old, and always at night) and I put it down to a cold and over supply but after about a week he started vomiting every feed and ended up in hospital with a respiratory infection. The infection was affecting his ability to keep his feeds down - they get too knackered basically to do both when very small.

Don't want to worry you but if she does have a cold might be worth a trip to your GP. Even then our DS was fine on our first trip and it was only that his resp rate had gone up when we went back for a check the next day which sent us to the paediatric team, and then it was only to be on the safe side that we were kept in for observation. he only went badly downhill a day later.

Hope that's not the case for you but can't hurt to be on the look out for resp infection symptoms...

If nappies and weight gain are fine, and it doesn't happen at every feed, then it sounds within the normal range of baby behaviour.

Have you tried feeding her in more upright positions to let gravity do its thing?

If MW happy and nappies etc are ok, it is probably a phase which will pass - albeit a messy one...

It takes several weeks for your milk supply to calibrate and in that time it can be easier to go with the flow - limiting feeds may not be such a good idea.

I don't think the OP was thinking about 'limiting feeds', beaver....I agree , not a good idea. But inserting a break might help.

Though now I read it really is no more than a couple of times a day, it prob is just normal baby behaviour

beaver = bear

Thanks everyone for your advice, tiktok is right, i am not limiting feeds as such, just dragging them out over a longer period of time and giving her a rest every ten mins or so. I am pleased the consensus seems to be that it is relatively normal, i will mention it to the midwife again but not panic just yet.

This is all new to me, my older DD would eat efficently, bring up a polite burp of gratitude and go back to sleep!!!

How long does it take for the supply to settle down or is that like asking how long a piece of string is?

My DD would do this regularly - so much so that we used to cover furniture and ourselves with towels during feeds .
She was very premature and tiny but she never lost an ounce. We did worry about it at first but she kind of grew out of it gradually - I seem to remember it all being much better by 4 months.
She is now a very athletic 7 year old. We laugh about it now.

Take the advice of your HV/midwife and try not to worry.

Hopefully this is probably irrelevant, but your post reminded me of a friend whose baby had pyloric stenosis. Have just looked for some information online and symptoms can start in the third week following birth and may get worse if it is pyloric stenosis.

Here's an information leaflet here

I guess if it's still only happening occasionally and your DD is fine in herself, then she may be just a sicky baby from time to time. If not, get it checked.
