Allergic to lanolin - alternatives to lansinoh for breast feeding?

Expecting baby #3 in 4 weeks, i'm allergic to lanolin, can anyone suggest a good alternative - I already have dry skin on my nipples and want to get them in as good condition as possible prior to starting breastfeeding again - I suffered from cracked nipples getting started with breastfeeding both times before, all fine once past the first few weeks and carried on past a year each time - hoping I'll do better with the positioning this time.

Any suggestions for an alternative to lanolin based nipple cream?

kamillosan?

I found pure aloe vera gel to be really good.

Ok, you don't actually need nipple cream to breast feed.

Nipples get cracked because of bad positioning and latch, so get that sorted asap.

If your nipples are tender, if you rub a bit of the milk from the end of the feed (or colostrum) on your nipples, and let them air dry if possible, that should soothe them.

I'm allergic to lanolin too. I just expressed a few drops of milk at the end of the feed and let my nipples air dry (obviously not if I was in a cafe or something .

I also found this really good, especially the first time round.

All the best!

Just wanted to jump in on the discussion if you don't mind. It is true that it is very important to have a good latch (wide open mouth, good positioning at the breast) and that will head off alot of soreness and potential pain. It is possible as you and your baby get the swing of breastfeeding that there can be soreness and it is important to soothe and heal that soreness in order to continue to nurse.

Lansinoh Lanolin is actually ultra purified and refined medical grade lanolin that is hypoallergenic so it can be used safely by someone allergic to lanolin or wool. The two components that make a lanolin allergenic-free lanolin alcohols and detergent residues--have been removed as have pesticide residues which makes Lansinoh Lanolin more pure and refined than other lanolins who do not remove these items. We'd be happy to send you a sample if you would like to test it out.

I thought Lansinoh was only proven for use in moist wound healing? Ie not for sore nipples at all, where it has no effect.

Off topic a bit but I too am allergic to Lanolin, you have to be really careful now days with all lotions and creams as they changed the law awhile back so that if the percentage of an ingredient is less then a certain amount it doesn't have to be listed on the packaging.

It's a right pee take I used to use Palmers cocoa butter but they started adding it to that without writing it on the label and I have wasted money on various lip balms I can't use since that law was passed.

I used vaseline if I was out and about and didn't have lansinoh with me in the early times. Although it's said that it should be removed prior to feeding, noone's ever really given a good explanation why - especially as my MW told me it was okay to put it on DDs lip when she had a sore feeding blister.

Nurmle · 26/03/2010 19:31

Me too, I used Green baby's nipple cream. No nasties in.

judyem · 10/04/2010 22:50

Hi all, many thanks for your comments. I used lansinoh with my first two babies as couldn't find anything else that worked, it did trigger my allergy both times, it's not a severe reaction thankfully - little bumps all over my hands, uncomfortable but not as painful as sore nipples! I took a look at Kamillosan but noticed that contains lanolin too.

Thanks Ryoko for your comment, I didn't know the law had changed but have noticed my allergy has triggered more often lately than it used to.

I'll try the milk/air drying option and see how we get on. Only another 10 days to go!

I find this brand's products extremely good, although not sure if they contain hidden lanolin as previously suggested on this thread

I'm also allergic to lanolin but only reused after a few weeks of using lansinolh.

Kamilosan also contains lanolin.

I tried everything but have Vaseline to be the best.
