Thrush - How much fluconazole have you taken / been prescribed?

After cracked nipples and mastitis now have the joy of trhush! GP prescribed a 7 course of 50mg fluconazole but told me that the debate is out on whether it's safe for the baby or not and that I should try to take only one or two tablets.

Just read on the kellymom website that for it to work you should start with 200-400mg and then continue with 100-200mg for 10-14 days!! Otherwise it won't work.... But the article is from 2001. Is this information outdated? I don't know what to do... The 2 tablets I've taken already are giving ds an upset tummy... do't really want to continue if it's not going to work..

Please share your experiences with me!

I had a one-off dose which did the job (treated baby with nystatin and my nipples topically at the same time). The breastfeeding network recommends the dose stated in this leaflet, but obviously it is your GP's call.

AFAIK there isn't much of a debate about the safety for fluconazole for babies. The issue is that it is licenced in the UK for babies to take orally, but not specifically for breastfeeding mothers. So a baby could be given a much bigger dose than it would get in your breastmilk and that would be considered ok.

TBH I would take the whole course if possible because thrush can be an absolute bastard to get rid of. It could be the thrush itself that is making your baby uncomfortable - it made my DD2 very gassy with explosive poos that made her cry.

Thanks MrsHappy, that's more like what's in the kellymom wbsite. The mw did tell me to look up recommended treatments before going to the GP, she probably already suspected that they wouldn't know what the best treatment is! Unfortunately my internet has been down and I didn't have a chance.

I will take the whole course - ds has been vry gassy for a couple of weeks, it'll be interesting to see if he gets better!

I took quite a high dose, for a few days. I'm sure it was 200mg for four or three days but don't quote me on that. I do know they are very expensive tablets to buy! My GP bf her three babies so really knew what she can and cannot prescribe.

She had initially prescribed the one off dose but it didn't touch it.

Thanks belgo.
I just found on the internet the leaflet for an oral suspension of fluconazole that can be used in newborns. I can't believe how misinformed my GP was!! She practically made me feel guilty for taking a single tablet!

I hope it gets better soon!
