Uncomfortable 3wk old - reflux?

Chunkamatic · 20/03/2010 22:18

DS2 is just over 3 wks old and EBF. He has been gaining weight well since he was born, but I feel like his fussiness and general discomfort is getting worse by the day...

I seem to have quite a forceful let-down, and at the moment my supply seems abundant. At first I was just convinced that he was quite hungry and any fussiness that occured was because of the let down.

However, the last week we seem to have got in to a bit of a pickle... He will wake and feed Ok for about 10-15mins. Then he will be awake and after a short time seems to be uncomfortable, and starts rooting for food. So I feed him, which seems to make him worse! I can't help but think that he is wanting the sucking comfort but not the milk, IYSWIM? The milk then seems to make him more uncomfortable and he wriggles and arches his back. Up until the last few days it was relatively easy to get him off to sleep but the now it is taking longer and longer and as soon as you move him he seems to be uncomfortable again.

He's like this all day long. We seem to manage to get a decent stretch of sleep in the afternoon and again in the late evening. He's just gone off now and I will take him to bed soon, typically he will stay asleep for about an hour and a half and then come in to bed with me and feed every hr till around 4am when he wakes and gets sick.

I know it's quite usual for them to have a fussy period in the day - but this seems like all the time he is awake he is fussy and in discomfort, holding him doesnt make any real difference. I dont want to miss something that could be remedied.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

DD had reflux from 2 weeks old. She started losing weight rapidly from being sick after every feed. It was helped by infant Gaviscon. She didn't seem bothered about it at all and it didn't appear to hurt or make her unsettled.

Could it be lactose intolerance?

This sounds like my experience of reflux. Arching the back is typical of reflux, and they like to take the milk because it's alkaline so it soothes the acid heartburn, but it's a vicious circle because the milk then causes the whole thing to start again. My DD was BFing virtually constantly in the early days, e.g. non-stop from 6pm to 12 midnight EVERY NIGHT! That went on for weeks. Finally at 5 weeks the vomiting started and someone mentioned reflux. I would have a chat with a HV or a doc but I think you're on the right track. Good luck!

Thanks. I had loads of difficulty feeding DS1 and never sought any help because I thought it was just the usual colic/fussiness that is often spoken about - but looking back now I really wish I'd spoken to someone to rule out any preventable problems.

HV is coming on Monday so will speak to her - again.

How did you get on with the HV Chunkamatic?

Do babies always vomit with reflux?

My DS is 4 weeks old, feeds ALL DAY - usually from 10am-5pm with the odd break of 15 minutes or so spaced throughout each feed. Surely this can't be normal? Is really getting me down as he howls as soon as he's taken off the breast, just like Chunkamatic said.

Because I'm not sure what he wants and he's rooting I assume he's hungry and feed him, and thus the circle continues!

At night he's fine, so it's just during the day. Any tips??

oh TLC - my DD is nearly 2 weeks and is doing this too! im beginning to lose my mind. at night i get 2 - 3 hrs between feeds so i should think myself lucky i guess. but being stuck to the sofa all day feeding makes it hard to look after a rowdy 3yr old!

mine always seems to be rooting, so i feed her thinking that if she is rooting she must be hungry??

i have the HV coming this afternoon so ill ask what she tinks of it.

SaraBas · 25/03/2010 13:48

You can get silent reflux

Guys i'm trying to start a reflux thread for exactly this sort of stuff.

Being stuck on sofa is no fun.

TakeLovingChances · 25/03/2010 14:20

mad4 this is the same as my DS! He sleeps quite well, wakes up every 3 hours or so and settles well at night.

During the day it's a nightmare as I'm constantly feeding him.

I asked HV yesterday. She said it seems he has trapped wind as he often brings his knees up and cries, plus he farts a lot. She told me to use Infacol. I got some yesterday evening, so it's still a bit early to know if it works.

mad4mainecoons · 26/03/2010 18:46

i thought that wind might be the problem so i bought some infacol. but DD goes ballistic when i try to squirt it into her mouth.

thats almost as distressing as the wind itself and im worried if i doit before every feed it will put her off nursing.

not sure wether to persevere or not

TakeLovingChances · 27/03/2010 12:41

I got some Infacol too. DS seems to not like it, but he doesn't spit it out or get upset. Hope your DD 'learns' to take the Infacol, as it has seemed to have worked for my DS.

Oh, and it hasn't put him off feeding, but he is a feeding machine!
