Breastmilk or water for a vomiting toddler?

DitaVonCheese · 20/03/2010 20:03

If an 18 month old toddler has been vomiting every 4-6 hours, would breastmilk or water be the best thing for her/least likely to irritate her stomach? She still feeds quite often anyway and was taking a lot of bm between pukes, and then was sick after (but not immediately after) some but not all feeds. She is happy and chirpy when not actually vomiting and doesn't have a temperature.

Cheers

Keep bfing her on demand. It is unlikely to irritate her stomach, but will give her nutrients etc to help her get over the bug. As long as she stays hydrated she'll be fine. I hope she gets better soon.

Breastmilk definitely. It hydrates them better imo and is very gentle on the tummy. Plus the comfort is great for them The worst tummy bug DD1 had was when my milk had gone due to being pg. She was so lethargic she could hardly move, it was very scary. Any other bug she's always bounced back very quickly. Hope DD is better soon

Thanks for the replies I am just looking for some support after the fact really. We are just back from a week away with my family, during which DD spent two days vomiting every few hours, usually directly down my front First I had an argument a discussion with my mum, who wanted me to stop feeding DD and switch to water, then my SIL waded in, agreeing with my mum. I was convinced that bm would be the best thing (and DH agreed ) but was wracked with doubt and guilt.

Hoping we are over it now, but she was sick down me on the plane home today

Oh dear I hope she settles down tonight. It's hard when others are so determined to undermine your choices especially when you're away and out of your comfort zone, so to speak.

Definitely breastmilk.

Even if a feed comes straight back up, it is so readily absorbed that some of it will have been of use.

Get well soon little one.

Completely agree with pps that bm is absolutely the best thing for her atm.

Thanks again for the replies CharChar that was it exactly - I felt very isolated and kept wishing I could get to the internet!

I've found this page on Kellymom which also says that bm is the best thing. Trying to resist the urge to email it to my mum! In her defence, I think that when I said things like "She had a big feed earlier but then was sick again" she was interpreting an element of cause and effect which I didn't intend at all.

Anyway, DD has been vomit-free (and extremely hungry!) since we got on the plane yesterday, so fingers crossed that this is finally the end of it
