Is my 4 week old getting enough breast milk?

My baby was born at 8lb 12oz and is currently around 9lb 8oz at 4 weeks. She appears healthy and wets / poohs about 10 nappies a day. My concern is she doesn't really feed for very long periods. She usually feeds for 10-15 minutes every 4 hours - and she sleeps for up to 5 hours straigh in the evening. Whilst this is great for me I'm concerned she's not getting enough milk. I seem to produce lots of milk and leak all the time!

I'm just worried that most books I've read say a feed should take around 20 minutes and occur every 3 hours.

Put the book down! Your baby hasn't read it.

If she's gaining weight, having wet and dirty nappies and is settling, she is getting enough milk.

The books you have read have old and incorrect information. Newborns can feed for over an hour and as often as they want and it is still 'normal'.

You supply is still stabilising, so put your daughter to the breast as often as she wants - this is the best way to ensure she gets what she needs and your supply keeps up with her.

COngratulations on your lovely baby girl and for getting bfding established.

Thanks so much for your reassurances. Very much appreciated. Particularly like the comment about baby not having read the books. Will keep that as my mantra for the next few months!
